Arsenal defender Stephan Lichsteiner is already cementing himself as a fan favourite.

The veteran defender was brought in to bolster Emery’s defensive options and provide some competition to Hector Bellerin for the right-back position.

And after an impressive substitute display in Sunday’s defeat to Manchester City, the Swiss international has already shown Gooners he’s not arrived just to play back up to the Spaniard.

Lichsteiner, 34, also had some wise words for his teammate, who challenged him over his aims for the season. However, the Spaniard is determined to become Emery’s first-choice right-back, and he reiterated his aim in a one-to-one chat with fellow defender Lichtsteiner.

“Obviously I have my plan to be the starting right-back, what is your plan to be it?” Bellerin asked Lichtsteiner in an interview on Arsenal’s social media channels.

And Lichtsteiner’s response to Bellerin’s question was brilliant.

“We are a team,” he said. “It’s not Hector against Stephan, it’s Hector and Stephan for Arsenal.

“There are so many games, so I just need to be ready for each game I have to play and win with my team – with our team – to win the games and win the titles and try and come back to the Champions League.

“The most important thing is to be ready.”

Arsenal travel to Stamford Bridge for another top six clash this weekend.
