Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has held his hands up and apologised for his role in Man United midfielder Juan Mata’s opening goal at Old Trafford.

The former Southampton man admitted that he could have done more to prevent the Spaniard from breaking the deadlock in the second-half.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the England international said:

“I’m disappointed with my part in their goal, he was my man and I’m very disappointed with myself.”

The Gunners’ late draw. thanks to an 89th minute header from substitute Olivier Giroud, makes it 17 games without a loss for Wenger’s side, the only defeat of the season being the opening day loss to Liverpool.

Considering the below par performance from the visitors, many fans will be happy to walk away from Old Trafford with a point. However, Walcott – who has bagged eight goals in all competitions so far – acknowledged that the side need to take more from such games if they are to challenge for the title.

The 27-year-old added:

“I would say we’d want more from our first half performance – but it could be a fair result to get a point. But you want more if you are going to be challenging for the title.

“We’ve had a bit of a blip but we’ve still managed to get points. In years gone by we’d have probably lost this game…this has been a tough place for us to play. But the guys did well.

“We need to turn these draws into wins. We’ve got a lot of tough games coming up but we’ve got a strong squad.”

The Gunners next chance to continue their unbeaten streak comes against Champions League rivals Paris Saint-Germain at The Emirates on Wednesday
