Wenger confirms Arsenal ace will start but is he the right choice?

Szczesny says Arsene Wenger overreacted to him smoking

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Wojciech Szczesny will start in goal today against Reading. The Pole has found himself ousted from the side after the nightmare at Southampton on New Years Day, and has since had to settle for a role in the cup run.

He hasn’t featured for the side since the last FA Cup match, a 2-1 win over United at Old Trafford on March 9th, but is set for another chance between the sticks today. Is he the right choice?

To be fair, Wenger’s policy has always been to play the second keeper in the side’s cup run, so it is rightfully Szczesny’s opportunity to get a match. In terms of form, he looked sharp against United and although he is no longer playing regularly, he is a seasoned veteran and should be up for it.

I have no qualms about Szczesny playing in goal today. He seems to have straightened his act since the infamous smoke gate incident, and I think it took some real competition for him to come the realization that his spot is not guaranteed.

He got that and then some with the introduction of Ospina, and Szczesny understands he has a real fight on his hands if he ever wants to see the pitch again. The odd match here and there is good to keep his sword sharp and also affords him the chance to prove his worth.

It is the right decision.
