Arsene Wenger wants Danny Welbeck to stay at Arsenal beyond this summer.

The Englishman has struggled for form this season and has started just seven Premier League games.

Despite finding the net only three times so far, Wenger is adamant he wants to see the 27 year-old extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium.

“I want to keep him [Welbeck] because I believe he has gone through a torrid time,” said Wenger (via Sky Sports). “He has come out well. I see signs in training now that are positive. If he can stay on the pitch and not be injured, I want him to stay here.”

The Frenchman added: “I like him because he can play left, right or up front. For me he is a useful player, first of all because of his quality.

Welbeck is expected to be a key figure in Arsenal’s Europa League set up following the absence of Alexandre Lacazette – the Frenchman underwent knee surgery last week and is expected to be sidelined for a month. Meanwhile club-record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ineligible to compete in the competition.

Welbeck has found the net 22 times in almost four years as an Arsenal player, but Wenger believes the former Manchester United forward offers more than just goals.

“He might not be a goalscorer like Harry Kane for example, but for England he can perfectly play with Harry Kane because he can play on the flanks.”
