The addition of Alexandre Lacazette is set to be a huge move for Arsenal, and a sure signal of intent that they mean business next year after a dismal last season.

However, that is exactly what it is, a signal, and a signal only. To show true intent, they must not stop at the signal and instead follow through on those messages. You wouldn’t indicate and not turn after all – unless you are of course a terrible driver – which is exactly what the Gunners don’t want to be.

The signing has an eery similarity to the acquisitions of both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, both trademark signings of their own.

Mesut Ozil signed for the Gunners in the summer of 2013 for nearly £40 million. Alongside him came Kim Kallstrom and Yaya Sanogo. Alexis Sanchez joined a year later for a similar fee, and with him too Gabriel Paulista and Mathieu Debuchy, amongst others.

Signing one big player is not the answer to the club’s problems, least of all when that signing is followed by a handful, or sometimes two, or less than average additions who do nothing to push the club forward.

Lacazette cannot follow that same pattern. Alongside the Frenchman, there must be further quality.

So Arsenal, indicate, turn the corner and follow that new road instead of annoying everyone else on the roads.
