Wenger says Arsenal have 99% chance of signing midfielder

More good news for Arsenal, as Arsene Wenger revealed in his press conference yesterday that there is a very good chance the club will resign Francis Coquelin to a new deal. Coquelin’s current deal expires this summer, and Arsenal are working hard to tie down the player to a long term extension.

The young Frenchman has impressed greatly since his return from loan, and is quickly establishing himself as a key part of the side.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Wenger said this about the future of Coquelin:

“It is 99% [certain] that he will stay here.”

As we know, retaining your squad’s key players is just as important as adding new additions, so this is a progressive move from Wenger. Coquelin is showing that he can be Arsenal’s long term solution in the defensive midfield department, so tying him down is integral to Arsenal’s future plans.

Coquelin, alongside new signing Bielik could anchor Arsenal’s midfield for years to come, so we will be hoping he signs the deal sooner rather than later. I like what I see from Coquelin. He is intelligent in his play, positioning himself to prevent dangerous situations for the opposition. He is quick, aggressive, and strong in the challenge which means he wins the majority of his tackles and wins possession back for us.

I hope to see Coquelin in an Arsenal shirt for many more years to come.
