Arsene Wenger says he will splash out on a £70m if Alexis Sanchez leaves Arsenal next summer.
The who Chilean has entered the final year of his current deal has his proposed move to Manchester City collapse after Gunners target Thomas Lemar refused to switch Monaco for North London on transfer deadline day.
City had offered £60m for Sanchez, but the 28 year-old could now walk for free come the end of the season. Sanchez can begin pre-contract agreements in Janaury and Wenger admits his side are paying a ‘huge price’ in allowing him to leave for nothing.
The tactician believes it will cost £70million to replace Sanchez next summer: ‘You take Sanchez into the final year of your contract, you sacrifice £60m-£70m income and then at the end of the season you will have to buy somebody for that amount of money,’ said Wenger in an interview with beIN Sports. ‘So it has a huge price. So at some stage you have to make a decision you have to sacrifice one or two [players].
Arsenal’s early season struggles in the Premier League have lead to the fans questioning why more players were not recruited this summer.
The Gunners, who spent less money than Fleetwood Town this summer can get their season back on track at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.
