UEFA have announced that they will follow a “sporting merit” rule to decide who qualifies for the Champions League next season.

European football’s governing body has expressed their intention for the Premier League season to be completed – even if it is a shortened campaign.

However, they have declared that places should be awarded on a “sporting merit” if the league season cannot finish.

It’s bad news for Arsenal who were hopeful of qualifying for the Champions League via their coefficient ranking.

The majority of European football has been suspended for more than a month amid the coronavirus crisis.

Belgium have already cancelled First Division football, while it is anticipated Dutch football is soon to follow.

If the football season cannot be completed, UEFA open to a shortened campaign or for a play-off competition to decide who enters the 2020/21 competition.

In a statement UEFA said: “It would be preferable that suspended domestic competitions would restart with a different format in a manner which would still facilitate clubs to qualify on sporting merit”.

Arsenal are currently 9th in the Premier League and eight points adrift of 4th placed Chelsea.
