The centre back positions have been a bit of an uncertainty lately for Arsenal, with Laurent Koscielny the only real definite starter out of three possible options. Per Mertesacker and Gabriel have shared the minutes alongside Koscielny in recent weeks, and there doesn’t seem to be a preferred centre back pairing at the moment.

The severity of Koscielny’s hamstring knock is yet to be determined, but in the event that he recovers, who should get the nod alongside him to face United at the weekend?

Gooners have been torn over this debate as of late with some preferring Gabriel’s pace and aggression. Others prefer Mertesacker’s intelligence and calming presence, and both have presented good accounts of themselves when given chances.

Mertesacker came under much fire last season from some some sections of supporters when his lack of pace and mobility was exposed on some occasions, while Gabriel faced language barrier issues and sometimes struggled to communicate effectively.

Gabriel offers pace and aggression, similar to Koscielny in that right, and with those two paired you never really have to worry about recovery. That is the advantage these two offer, and they have grown as a pair.

Mertesacker and Koscielny are of course the recognized pair for the last few seasons, with Mertesacker offering obvious height and strength, as well as intelligent reading of the game. He excels in that aspect over Gabriel, but lacks in pace compared to the Brazilian.

Both are fantastic defenders in their own right, and Wenger has his work cut out for him. The likes of Martial and Memphis are pacey customers, and will look to interchange and run in behind. United also like to whip crosses in, so there is a justifiable argument for either.

What do you think gooners? Who should get the nod to face United?

Gabriel and Kos. Look how Per gave the 3rd goal away against Olympiakos. He lacks agression. I don’t want the big friendly giant in our defense.
