Arsenal are notorious for being frugal in the transfer market – and that trend looks set to continue into the next transfer window.

No funds were released for Unai Emery to make permanent signings in January. The Spaniard, who reportedly had his eyes on the likes of former Atletico Madrid star Yannick Carrasco, PSG’s Christian Nkunku and England man Gary Cahil, only managed to pick up Denis Suarez last month.

Now it is being reported that the Gunners boss will only have a budget of £40m this summer.

The restricted budget means the new Arsenal boss faces another transfer window operating on tight resources.

It undoubtedly leaves Emery facing an uphill battle to improve his current squad and close in on the teams above.

Sunday’s 3-1 loss at Manchester City underlined the gulf between Arsenal and the elite.

One way to get around this would be to free up funds via the wage budget. Despite being on the fringes of the team, Mesut Ozil is currently pocketing £350,000-per-week. Meanwhile, both Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey are likely to leave in the summer, potentially slashing a further £300,000 off the books.
