New Manchester United signing Memphis Depay was reportedly nearly the subject of a bidding tug of war. United beat out the likes of PSG and Liverpool to secure the signature of the 21 year old, while Arsenal and Chelsea were credited with interest without official approaches.

United stumped up a hefty £25m for the player on a four year deal, with the deal subject to medical and set for completion in the summer.

Arsene Wenger explained why Arsenal snubbed the chance to land the Dutchman, admitting he rates the lad but insisting his position on the pitch is already filled up.

“I like him but we have plenty in that position,” he said.

The boss is spot on, hit the nail directly on the head. Arsenal were right to pass up on Depay, as most gooners would agree that the wing is the farthest of the side’s concerns and probably the squad’s most congested area.

Between Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Joel Campbell in that position, Depay would have quite the hard time breaking in the side.

The latter three are having a hard enough time breaking in as it is, so Depay would have an uphill battle to get into the Arsenal XI as well.

Besides, the player reuniting with his former international boss is something Arsenal could never had competed with anyway, so with that being said it is best the club stayed away.
