Following Arsenal’s drop to third in the table after the defeat to Chelsea, Jonathan Kaney stamps out the claims that the Gunners have conceded the Premier League title.

It was a frustrating defeat to Chelsea in a game that was there for the taking, and another example of why Diego Costa is one of the most hated players in the Premier League as he rolled around as if he’d been shot to get Per Mertesacker sent off.

It was a clumsy challenge by the German, but a harsh and debatable red card which ultimately changed the complexion of the game and cost us defeat to Chelsea yet again, with ten men for the second time this season.

The Premier League table is now a glaringly obvious picture of missed opportunity for us as we remember careless losses to West Ham, West Brom, Southampton and dropped points against Liverpool and Spurs, as well as a reminder of many daily football accas down the drain.

Realistically we should be several points clear at the top but now the loss to Chelsea, instead of putting us back top of the league, sees us drop down to third, three points behind unlikely leaders Leicester, level on points with City and, more disconcertingly, only two points above Spurs.

The doubters in the media have already started bashing the club and the manager for a slide in form over the festive period which has seen us go from favourite to as bottlers who are surrendering the league.

Nothing could be more ridiculous.

The season ends of the 15th May. It’s the 25th of January and we are three points off the top. Regardless of our lack of wins in recent games, we are still in absolutely superb position. Take Leicester, who surely won’t keep the pace, out of the equation and we are level with City.

This season has been a rollercoaster already and there’s not a single Gooner who doesn’t believe we will end the season on top of the Premier League.

We’ve suffered plenty of setbacks in between the highs this season. The loss to West Ham, the 3-0 defeat to Sheffield United, the losses in the Champions League to Zagreb and Olympiacos, topped up by a 5-1 defeat in Munich. We’ve come through them all to bounce back.

The injuries we’ve had to contend with on the wings and particularly to Sanchez, Coquelin and Cazorla, have derailed us. But while it’s a sore result to take losing like that and to have the double done over us, it’s the red side of London who will be having the last laugh at the end of the season.

We are fighting at the top of the league, alive in the Champions League and FA Cup, and we have to get over this setback and put it to the back of our minds and carry on with the season. Congratulations to Chelsea for picking up three points. They will come in handy in the relegation battle this season.
