All the talk right now is of Arsenal signing a big-name striker this summer, but the Gunners are also homing in on Spanish midfield superstar Martin Zubimendi.
The 26-year-old Euro 2024 winner has been linked with Premier League clubs for well over a year now – most notably Premier League leaders Liverpool last summer. But ultimately he decided against making the move to Anfield.
Now it appears the Real Sociedad lynchpin is experiencing regret over turning down the chance to move to England, and Arsenal are very much set to benefit. A top, top midfielder with all the attributes Mikel Arteta desires, what is not to like?

According to a report from FootballTransfers, Zubimendi is keen to make the big move this summer, but he is also seeking assurances from Arteta and co before shaking hands on a transfer.
Arsenal set for Zubimendi talks
The latest report, from Steve Kay, claims that the pursuit of Zubimendi is gathering pace, with the midfielder’s representatives set to fly to London this week for further discussions with club officials.
The Gunners have been long-time admirers of the Spanish international and have already held advanced talks regarding a potential summer transfer.
It is understood that Arsenal are prepared to double Zubimendi’s wages and have reached an agreement on a four-year contract. The transfer fee would be around €60m.
Despite the financial and sporting incentives on offer, the 26-year-old remains cautious about the move and is seeking assurances on non-football-related matters before committing to the transfer.
Zubimendi has spent his entire career in Sociedad, having come through the club’s academy and establishing himself as one of LaLiga’s most consistent midfielders.
His deep-rooted connection to the San Sebastián-based side, along with his strong ties to the Basque Country, have made the decision to leave a difficult one.
What Zubimendi wants
While Arsenal can offer Champions League football, a significant pay rise, and a key role in Mikel Arteta’s midfield, Zubimendi’s hesitation revolves around factors such as lifestyle adjustments, family relocation, and settling into life in England. The midfielder is known to value stability and is keen to ensure that any potential move aligns with his personal and professional ambitions.
Despite Zubimendi’s concerns, Arsenal remain optimistic that they can convince him to make the switch in the summer. Mikel Arteta has been a driving force behind the pursuit, believing that the Spaniard’s technical ability, tactical intelligence, and experience in a high-pressing system make him an ideal fit for his side.

The Gunners are prepared to provide full support in easing the transition for Zubimendi and his family, which could prove crucial in finalising the deal. With his representatives traveling to London this week, Arsenal will be hoping to iron out the remaining details and secure their long-term midfield target ahead of the summer transfer window.
For now, the ball is in Zubimendi’s court. Arsenal have done everything possible to secure the move and will continue working to accommodate the midfielder’s personal considerations.
So despite all the fallout from not signing a striker in January, there is good stuff coming. Zubimendi, plus a top striker (Sesko or Isak, please) means the future is in good hands.
