Yet again, after Arsenal’s disappointing result against Hull City in the Premier League, Alexis Sanchez was showered in plaudits for his phenomenal work-rate with many commenting on how the Chilean international didn’t deserve to be on anything other than a winning side.

The former Barcelona forward has certainly added another dimension to our play and is clearly frustrated at times that his team-mates aren’t following suit with his tenacious and all-action displays.

So, given that Sanchez is seen as a shining light in what has been, at best, a lukewarm start for the Gunners, I thought I’d take a look at the forward’s stats.

Given that he has only played 151 minutes in the Champions League and the one appearance in the Capital One Cup, I’m just going to focus on his Premier League stats as we can get a greater indication of Alexis’ input.

The 25-year-old has featured in seven of Arsenal’s eight Premier League games so far this season, making a combined total of 511 minutes – which, somewhat surprisingly, isn’t even six full games.

A criticism fired at Sanchez during his time at the Nou Camp was that the Chilean was too selfish on the ball and often made the wrong decision. During the seven league games, Sanchez had made a total of 302 passes – 152 of them being forward – with 233 finding their intended target but does that indicate a ‘hogger’?

If you compare Alexis’ passing stats to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, a player who has played 114 minutes less in the Premier League this season, the England international has made 12 less forward passes, 75 less total passes and 53 less successful passes; very similar stats, I think you’ll agree.

I wasn’t planning on doing this, but, having looked at all of Chamberlain’s stats compared to Alexis, plus the fact they’ve both played very similar roles for the team this season, I think it’s beneficial to continue down that path.

Key passes: AS 14-5 Ox

Assists: AS 2-0 Ox

Goals: AS 3-1 Ox

Total Shots: 16-12

Shot Accuracy: 64%-25%

Tackles Won: 9-5

Successful Take-Ons: AS 19-17 Ox – both have a 50% success rate

The stats speak favourably for our Chilean superstar and probably add even more credibility to those who suggest Alexis only deserves to be on the side that bags the three points.

Yes, true, Alexis works very hard for the team, but he holds on to the ball for too long and thereby disrupts the passing game of the team. He needs to work on this aspect of his game and he will be fine.
