Aaron Ramsdale: Toys Out Of The Pramsdale

He wasn't dropped because he was ****. Arteta prefers what Raya offers playing out from the back. There's lots of people who think Ramsdale is the better shot stopper so clubs aren't buying a bad keeper. It's like if we sold Jesus now because Havertz has pushed him out of the team. He's not a bad player, he's just not the preferred option.
He got dropped because he was single handedly losing us games with his errors.

He got dropped because he got too comfortable as a starter.

Admitting you can't concentrate for a full game on a club with title aspirations as a starter?

Would that fly at Madrid? Or Man city? He'd be more than dropped. He'd get shipped out.

Once Raya arrived, he knew his days were numbered and, as a result, his errors compounded.

Arteta will back you and give you the benefit of the doubt to a point. He isn't that ruthless. But if you don't produce, your role will get reduced and/or get benched eventually. Especially now that the stakes are much higher. Now seeing Arteta favorites like Zinny, Eddie, and Jesus having reduced roles. Martinelli on the bench. Not a shock to see Ramsdale getting benched as well.

Raya should take heed as well. He has made some mistakes of late. With the way Arteta goes through goalkeepers, he might see the same fate as Leno, Martinez, and Ramsdale.

Ramsdale is young for a goalkeeper at 25. He has to mature a little bit. He has solid shot-stopping ability. He'll never be Ederson with the ball at his feet, but that is okay. A lot of good goalkeepers aren't either. Just has to have better concentration and focus on honing his craft rather than the fans in the crowd or pigeons in the sky.

Not sure that he got too comfortable. More that the vibe he transmits is great for an underdog or a team punching upwards, but not so much for a team that wants to dominate.

To be at his best, Ramsdale needs to be involved, or his concentration can drop off. To be a keeper for a really top team, you need to be happy doing nothing for 85 mins and also generally have a calmness that transmits to the team. That was Seaman's super power - technically he wasn;t much better than most other top-flight keepers, but he could do nothing for 89 mins and then pull off an absolute worldy, and he was so comfortable with crosses etc, he just made you feel safe, hence the moniker.

Raya has more of that calm vibe, but has still shown some jittery moments, particularly in the games with the highest pressure. Was the same at Brentford too.

Ramsdale can make saves that Raya can't but isn't as good on crosses, with the ball at his feet or most importantly at giving nonchelant calm. Ramsdale may yet turn into an elite keeper as many of the tools are there, but as Arsenal's progress went into fast forward, we suddenly didn't have time for him to work through his weaknesses.

With how marginal Raya has improved us (in my opinion) it's definitely a preference thing.

A good shot on target against us after being cold for 70-80+ mins is pretty much a goal conceded regardless of whether Ramsdale or Raya is in there it doesn't really matter, so you might as well play the better kicker.

It's clear people grossly underestimate the difficulty of being on job to make your 1-2 save a match in comparison to constantly being busy and alert. It requires a different skillset that guys who have played for Bournemouth or Brentford would need to get used to.

People have fallen for the Arteta has dropped him so = bad player trope which happens way more than it should.

Too bad the “subbing keepers on” stuff Arteta was on about in September never took off.

Yeah what was that about

The media publications were egging him on too. In hindsight the transition to Raya could have been smoother and Arteta should have been firmer about Raya being his guy to quell speculation.

Instead he played politician and gave the British media (and Mitch) clearly rooting for Ramsdale false hope.

A title winning side cannot rely on a keeper who makes superman saves but lets in shots with small amount of xg. Too insecure , too panicky with the ball at his feet, cannot rely on him at crosses. Ramsdale train left and thanks god for that. Hopefully we can get our money back.

I still think Ramsdale is a very good keeper. I said at the begining of the season if the club think Raya is a calmer small upgrade though it is the right decision.

We should get our money back even make a slight profit on Ramsdale but it won't be easy. We are not at the status of Man City when it comes to selling.

The main problem as I have said before is that only big clubs will likely spend 30m+ on a keeper.

So it's mainly the current top 8 in the Prem.
You can rule out the top 4 obvs as their keepers are better unless Martinez got a move from Villa.

So it's really the 5th-8th place teams. 3 out of the 4 unfortunately for us have only just bought a keeper in the last 12 months so it doesn't bode well.
Ramsdale may be better than the Chelsea, Sp**s & Man U keeper but do they go big again in that position so soon. Sp**s & Man U not sure they see him as a clear upgrade & they have more pressing needs so imho not likely at all.

Chelsea possibly? Outside that only really the Toon depending on Pope's situation.
Maybe West Ham could afford him if they wanted?

And do they go for Ramsdale or Diogo Costa (Porto), Hradecky (Leverkuson), Vicario (Empoli), Unai Simon (Bilbao)?

Newcastle could probably finance a big deal too, if they think Pope is past his best physically.

But it seems there's only 4 clubs who have a market for Ramsdale and he might end up out on loan. Maybe West Ham is another market for him.

As I said it's likely only Chelsea, Toon or possibly West Ham. As you say there are other keepers out there.
In Ramsdales favour though he is young & English.

Whisper it quietly but I will stick my neck out & say perhaps a cash + swap deal with a certain player from the toon could be an option?
It won't go through as a swap though as you need to bank money for accounting purposes.

Toon imho could possibly be interested in taking Ramsdale + 1 more of our less used home grown players for one of their star players?

Obviously it will depend on if one of their stars makes it clear he wants to leave for champs league football & toon cant 'game' ffp with dodgy sponsorship deals & hidden payments to players.🤔

Who plays backup keeper when Ramsdale presumably leaves? Any chance we keep him just in case?

Ramsdale rightly will not want to sit on the bench for another season.
It all depends on the offers though?

As long as we at least get our money back we will bring in another no 2.

It's if clubs start offering a cheeky loan move for him we may have a problem.

So basically we're going to net nothing from this deal because we'll need to spend at least as much as we get for Ramsdale on his backup replacement.

Dunno can't see us spending a lot on a no 2.
If we can sell for £30m+ & pick up a replacement for less than half that should be fine.

I don’t think people always fall for it tbh because they kept putting Tierney in their first 11s even after he clearly got dropped.

I think he’s been proven right almost every time he drops a player though. I can’t think of one where it wasn’t justified. Ransdale isn’t good.

Unnecessary jab at Rams. Feel for the guy, thought he would be our Nr 1 for a decade
How is it an unnecessary jab to point out that you wanted to improve a position? The metrics prove that Raya is an improvement. Is Arteta supposed to pretend he's not an improvement? If Raya isn't an improvement is that not an even bigger jab at Ramsdale because then he's just lost his job for being a tit? He was too casual and he was replaced by a player who better fits our ambitions. That's reality, not a jab. When other players in the squad have been upgraded upon there hasn't been this level of sensitivity. I'm not sure what makes this player who has cost us in consecutive years special.

Arteta is right, Ramsdale took one too many touches to be our number 1 GK, you could tell that after game 3.

England loves their "flying" goalkeepers, that is why Ramsdale was highly praised, because of his reflex, same with Pitchfork, you just love that sort of GK. Well, the GK is now a libero first and a GK second, so, yes, without Raya our build up will still look sloppy. Raya´s distribution positioning and calmness with the ball just made us a much better team. He is a massive improvement in every department.

Arsenal Quotes

A team can attack for too long. The most opportune time for scoring is immediately after repelling an attack, because opponents are then strung out in the wrong half of the field. All the men are expected to play to plan, but not so as to stifle individuality
