Gabriel Martinelli: Dogged and Determined

arguably, the improvement in other areas came at the cost of the havoc he used to wreak on the left side. rest up and recover that potency over the off season. because if he were as effective this season as he was in the last... who knows where we'd be.

He should be our Jota, specifically Jota during 21/22, where he probably gets as many minutes as the front three (Mane, Firmino/Diaz, Salah) but when push comes to shove is first substitute.

If he could just change his running form from that of an aardvark to that of a stallion, he'd be much more effective.

That first clip is very similar to what Walcott use to be so effective at.

Performance at RW is largely irrelevant as he’s not taking it away from Saka.

It does however add a huge amount of credit to Martinelli being down because he lost Xhaka and Jesus.

Maybe

You're wrong, no?

Can't believe some people said he had a bad game. No surprise he looked better on the right. Our whole build up magic happens on that side.
I'm not a fan but that wasn't a bad game, although it was Everton so I'm not getting excited like some guys did with Nketiah after he scored 3 against a bottom team.

It wasn’t a bad game, but it wasn’t a good game either. Final pass letting him down as always, like how did he not cutback to Havertz in the first clip.

Works good openings but the final execution just wasn’t there, like that clip when he controls brilliantly, drives forward, goes between two players, does all the hard bits, and then messes up a simple cut back.

Your eye test said Pepe was elite. I'll just leave it at that
You don't rate KDB. I'll leave it at that.

Pepe was never elite but he's twice the footballer Nelli is. Arteta keeps trying to replace Nelli and you guys just don't wanna see that.

The guy retired 2 years ago so it doesn't matter if he is in Turkey, China, or playing for Arabas, he is just milking it. When he was on it Martinelli wasn't even half of the player Pepe was. Pepe played with the likes of Bellerin, Kolasinac, Holding, and Elneny and still looked a better player
Such a lazy arguement to point to where he plays now, the guy's career ended here.

Just look at their highlight clips and it's clear which player was more talented.

Thought he did as well as he could, but he’s not a realistic option on the right long term. Teams will suss him out very very quickly.

lol Every match day "We're gonna need Martinelli on for his pace!!" until he comes on and kicks the ball out of play and you can't even say anything about it without getting shot. He's mad popular.
15 league goals last season was the worst thing that could have happened when it comes to objectively analysing his game. Funny enough it's the same people who will laugh off Rash's 30 goal season as a purple patch that have blinkers on when it comes to Nelli's.

@2Smokeyy and I experienced this when it came to ESR and Ramsdale. Sometimes you just have to sitback and wait with the humble pie in one of those keep-warm things.

What do you seen as his role in the squad moving forward?

Pacy outlet option, maybe as a wide forward or CF as he could still succeed in a Walcott type role. I think we've seen enough (even at his best) that he doesn't have the vision/decision making to succeed as an inverted winger.

If the Neto/Nico Williams rumours are true then his days might really be numbered. They both match him for pace and are more natural wingers who get their head up. Us being linked to them is already a concern for Nelli imo. First Mudryk now these guys.

Neto is basically an older Martinelli with fewer goals.

Yet Mikel has been interested for years.

I think that's because he's a natural wideman, whereas people complain about Nelli being isolated on the wing, that's the exact position Neto wants to be in, we seem to be linked to out an out wingers, not the wide forward that Nelli is. I don't think that's by mistake.

Agreed, I think he can be our version of Jota, where he plays a lot of minutes, is a crucial player, but is just behind the front three (Mane/Salah/Firmino and later Diaz) when push comes to shove.

I think Trossard has shown a more technical player on the left gives us greater balance these days.

I won’t be losing any sleep over Martinelli if a big offer comes in for him. It’s not like he’s one of those players who are irreplaceable - well there aren’t many of them in the squad if we’re being completely honest.

There are a lot of attainable wide options on the market who can provide us with a better direct threat tbh. It doesn’t even have to be a flashy name if the club aren’t willing to fully invest in that position, just look at PSG when they signed Barcola for £35m who I hadn’t seen much of prior to the move. He’s impressed me this season whenever I’ve watched him.

On another day he could've had a goal and atleast a couple of assists for Havertz and Smith Rowe. Everton like many teams who come to the Emirates defend with numbers in the box so finding a teammate everytime is always going to be a challenge. He does have his head down moments for sure. But the point is, he looked much more involved on the right than on the left, and that has to be rooted structurally in how we build up.

Everton have been very good defensively tbf. Conceded the least goals outside the Top 3 this year or something like that

He put a few delicious crosses in from the right. On another day Havertz walks away with a brace heading two of those in.

Would like to see Martinelli on the right a bit more next season even as rotation for Saka. We need to get away from the concept of fixed positions for these players. It prevents us becoming a predictable team.

Arsenal Quotes

Arsenal have got as much chance of being handed the title by Sp*rs as I have of being given the Crown Jewels. They are the last people we want winning the Championship. Now we mean to round off our season by beating Arsenal.
