With the Premier League title now wrapped up by unlikely winners Leicester, attention is turning to next season for Arsenal who have the tough prospect of challenging the Foxes and improved Spurs, Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and City squads.

It was a fantastic start to the season for us, but our formation and tactics became too predictable and toothless in 2016 and it could be time for a change. We don’t know what’s going to happen in the summer with the squad – who will be in and out – but assuming the first-team stays roughly the same, I took a look at two formations that we could potentially switch to:

What do you think Gooners, how would you like to see us lineup next term?

4-3-3

Has never been a favourite with Arsene, but with Pep Guardiola arriving and most likely to remain with the 4-3-3 possession based formation he has won so much silverware with, Premier League football could change next season.

It remains to be seen whether this formation works consistently in the Premier League with Leicester showing that efficient counter-attacking and quick attacks can be more effective, but Arsenal certainly have the squad and talent to make it work.

Elneny, Cazorla, and Coquelin would be a formidable central midfield and Ozil, Giroud, Welbeck, Sanchez, Campbell, Walcott, the Ox and Iwobi could all play across the frontline. The likes of Ramsey, Wilshere, the Ox and Ozil are also interchangeable between the frontline and midfield, so the formation is ready made for this squad.

4-1-4-1

Very similar to what we already play, but would see a central midfielder deployed higher up the pitch and sacrifice a defensive shield player for a more attacking approach.

Arsene is always keen to have two holding midfielders, but Coquelin and Elneny are more than capable of being a sole defensive midfielder and this formation could definitely be a way to utilise Jack Wilshere’s talents alongside Mesut Ozil next season and provide more support to our attacking players.

We’ve dominated plenty of games this season and failed to score by being too cautious. Could be time for a change in central midfield and push one higher up.
