Arsenal are set to step up their efforts to sign Theo Walcott to a new contract, now that the Englishman is back from international duty. Reports in the Telegraph assert that both sides are willing and eager to reach a deal and that discussions are due to begin sometime in the week.

It is believed the player is seeking reassurance of regular first team football at the club, and Arsenal would do well to snap up the flying winger. Wenger spoke earlier in the summer about Walcott’s age (26) being perfect for a forward and how Walcott is approaching his “golden years.”

You would have to say hisĀ form during the latter stages of the season justifies these remarks and for me he has done enough to warrant a contract extension. His ability to operate anywhere along the front three gives Wenger a plethora of options, not to mention his pace and finishing ability.

Walcott is a real handful for defenders and as long as he can stay fit, he will soon establish himself as an integral part of the side once more.

Arsenal must do everything within reason to sign him up, or risk losing him to another club. With the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool reportedly interest, it is in the club’s best interest to get the deal done and dusted sooner rather than later.
