Arsenal are out of the EFL Cup after a 2-0 home defeat to Southampton.

Both Southampton and Arsenal rang in the changes for their EFL Cup quarter-final clash at a chilly Emirates, with Mohamed Elneny the only Gunners player to have retained his spot from the weekend’s win over Bournemouth.

Claude Puel brought his Saints side to north London looking to avenge their 2-1 defeat earlier in the Premier League season, and they got off to a good start, taking a 2-0 lead into half time.

Dutch midfielder Jordy Clasie opened the scoring after summer signing Sofiane Boufal’s shot was blocked, bagging his first goal in a Saints shirt.

With minutes to go before half time the visitors doubled their lead as England international, Ryan Bertrand, fired home an accurate strike from inside a clustered area.

As the second half bore on it was more of the same. Despite a slight resurgence from the Gunners there was no breakthrough, with the Saints going close on a few occasions.

So for Arsene Wenger it is a case of the apprentice getting one over on the master as his former player Claude Puel takes his side to the semi-finals.

Here are FIVE things we learned from the quarter-final defeat to Southampton…
