France and Arsenal star William Saliba progressed to the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a 3-1 win over Poland on Sunday.

THE LOWDOWN: DEFENDING CHAMPIONS PROGRESS

France returned to Qatar for the defence of the title they won in Russia four years ago and they have been able to churn out impressive performances in the Middle East to cruise into the next stage of the tournament.

Despite losing their final group game where Saliba came on for his debut, Les Blues topped their group to set up a clash with Poland in the round of 16.

It was a comfortable win for the champions in the end as former Gunners man Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe starred in the one-side encounter.

THE LATEST: HOW IT HAPPENED

France toppled Poland 3-1 to book their place in the final eight of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Didier Deschamps’ side met a bit of resistance in the opening 40 minutes of the game before an opening was carved in the dying embers of the half. Giroud received a wonderful pass from Mbappe to put the world champions ahead in the 44th minute to become France’s all-time men’s record goalscorer with his 52nd international goal.

While Saliba watched on from the bench, after the break, Mbappe took matters into his own hands with two fantastic finishes to help France remain in absolute control. However, Robert Lewandowski scored a late penalty to hand Poland a mere consolation.

THE VERDICT: NEXT TEST

Saliba was critical of his side’s performance final group game and did not make any appearance against the Polish side on Sunday.

Up next for him and France is England who defeated Senegal on Sunday night.
