Arsenal maintained their perfect start to the season after a goal from Gabriel Martinelli proved to be the difference against Aston Villa.

THE LOWDOWN: HARD-FOUGHT WIN

Arsenal once again showed their resilience and character after claiming a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates on Wednesday night.

Ahead of the game, Mikel Arteta predicted a tough outing against Villa and it appears he got that one right.

Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring in the first half, poaching a goal in the 30th minute after Martinelli flew down the left wing and passed to midfielder Granit Xhaka, whose cross deflected off a defender and toward Martínez.

The former Arsenal man parried the ball right into the path of Jesus, who only had to tap home from close range to bag his third goal of the season.

Arsenal dominated the game with lots of chances created, but failure to convert any of them soon put them in a difficult situation.

Douglas Luiz scored a bizarre equalizer for Villa in the 74th minute after his corner curled in without anyone touching it to get the visitors back into the match. That lead was short-lived as Martinelli put Arsenal back in the lead three minutes later after striking a brilliant finish from a delightful cross from Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal held on to that lead this time around and saw off their second 2-1 victory in succession.

THE LATEST: PERFECTION CONTINUES

The result meant Arsenal are now the only side to maintain a 100% win record after five games, which leaves them top of the league ahead of Manchester City.

Following that win, Mikel Arteta also became one of only 11 managers to have won the first five games of a Premier League season in a list that includes Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.

On an individual level, Jesus maintains a record where he has never lost in a Premier League game where he has scored; which is a rather good omen on closer look.

THE VERDICT: KEEP UP THE MOMENTUM

Arsenal continue to dispatch their opponents and claim maximum points. Though the last two games have not been fully convincing, victory is all that matters and that goal has pretty much been achieved.

Many continue to underplay the Gunners’ brilliant form, claiming they have all been ‘winnable’ fixtures.

Arsenal will be handed their first major test of the season when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday and all eyes will be eager to see if Mikel Arteta can mastermind yet another win.
For now, the Gunners remain the team to beat and sit deservedly at the top of the Premier League table.
