Arsenal are a step closer to completing a deal for Pablo Mari after agreeing a deal with Flemengo.

Mikel Arteta had prioritised signing a defender during the January transfer window.

Up until now though it appeared the Spaniard would have to make do. Particularly after reports earlier this week emerged that a move for Mari appeared to fall through.

The Spanish defender was spotted arriving in London with Arsenal’s technical director Edu.

Mari on course for Arsenal move

However, it was believed that the Brazilian side wanted a higher fee than the £7.5million being offered up by the Premier League outfit.

Arsenal switched their transfer proposal to a loan move, but Metro Sport say the teams have found a resolution with Arsenal agreeing to pay a loan fee of €5 million (£4.2m) followed by an option to buy this summer.

Mari was signed by Manchester City in 2016 but did not make an appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side

He could be thrown straight into the deep end after Shkodran Mustafi suffered an injury during the Gunners’ FA Cup win over Bournemouth on Monday night.
