Liverpool are to step aside in their pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria, leaving Manchester United and Arsenal in a head-to-head fight for the midfielder’s signature.

Defensive midfielder Zakaria has been attracting interest from clubs across Europe with his performances for the Bundesliga table-toppers.

The physical Swiss with an eye for goal, the 22-year-old has already racked up an impressive 24 caps for Switzerland.

Last month it was reported that Arsenal and Liverpool officials had held initial meetings with Zakaria’s representatives .

However, as reported by The Athletic, the Reds are no longer interested in signing the 22 year-old.

The publication claim that Kop boss Jurgen Klopp is already content with his middle men.

Zakaria could replace his fellow Swiss international Granit Xhaka at Arsenal , with the midfielder looking set to leave the club after his relationship with fans deteriorated.

As for United, Scott McTominay has been one of the club’s best performers this season at the base of midfield, although he is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, and Nemanja Matic is expected to leave the club.
