According to reports, Arsenal are ready to steal Manchester United defender Chris Smalling from the clutches of Roma this summer.

The centre-back has impressed this season on loan in Serie A and the Italian outfit are keen to tie him to a long-term deal.

Mikel Arteta is also looking to improve his defence and Corriere dello Sport suggest the Gunners head coach already has one eye on Smalling bolster his backline.

Smalling has spent 10 years at Old Trafford

The report suggests that the coronavirus pandemic has made a return to England a ‘concrete option’ for Smalling considering the distance between him and close family members.

Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Schalke’s Malick Thiaw are also firmly on the Gunners’ radar.

Meanwhile Manchester United are intersted in signing Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly as a long-term answer to their defensive frailties.

Upamecano or Samlling, Gooners? Let us know in the comments…
