Aston Villa and West Ham are reportedly readying big offers to sign Lille forward Jonathan David, with Arsenal still monitoring his situation…

THE LOWDOWN: DAVID PROFILE

David, primarily a centre-forward who can also play as a second striker or as an attacking midfielder, has been with Lille since 2020. [Transfermarkt]

Valued at £45m, the Canada international has scored 30 goals in 94 appearances for the Ligue 1 side and has an impressive record for his country, netting 20 times in 30 games.

Labelled as ‘fearless’ by Canada manager John Herdman, the two-footed forward is under contract in France until 2025, but it looks as if a summer exit could be on the cards.

THE LATEST: HELD TALKS

Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur provided an update on David’s future.

He claimed that both Villa and West Ham stand out in a long list of potential buyers, adding that they are ‘likely’ to write a ‘big cheque’ for his services.

Arsenal are also name-checked and are reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation, with a £55m fee mooted.

THE VERDICT: GET IN ON THE ACT

With the expiring contracts of both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah – Mikel Arteta’s only two current striker options – Arsenal will be desperately in need of a new forward line for next season, and signing David represents the perfect opportunity.

It’s unclear if Villa and West Ham will have the required funds to match Lille’s £55m asking price, and with the Gunners reportedly willing to splash the cash this summer, it means the north London club must get in on the act for his signature.

The Canadian goal predator has netted 89 goals between club and country during his relatively short career so far, with the striker being described as “fearless” and there is a reason why other clubs are sniffing around the 22-year-old.

This season, the former Gent man has scored 15 league goals, that is five more than Nketiah and Lacazette combined and despite being used in various attacking positions for Lille this season, he’s still managed to become a regular threat in the box.

That’s what Arsenal need, a penalty box presence and David could prove a stellar addition.
