Arsenal have emerged as surprise favourites to sign Thomas Muller from Bayern Munich.

According to German outlet Bild (as reported by Metro Sport), Muller, 30, has asked to move on from the German champions after becoming frustrated with a lack of game-time under Bayern manager Niko Kovac.

The striker has started just three Bundesliga games this season and is yet to start in the Champions League.

Manchester United along with Arsenal, two clubs strongly linked with the Germany forward in the past, are said to be on red alert ahead of the January transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are desperately struggling with fire power up front. Meanwhile with a Mesut Ozil exit looming and Dani Ceballos only on loan, Arsenal could bolster their attack by putting Muller in behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Former Bayern boss Otmar Hitzfeld does not think Arsenal target Muller will leave the Bundesliga side in January.

He told Goal: “Thomas Muller at another club is hard to imagine for me. He is an absolute identification figure for Bayern.

“He has played there since he was small and has matured into a world-class player, has won many titles.

“But in the end it is his decision if he wants to do something else. You have to respect that.”
