The Daily Star reports Arsenal have identified Schalke’s Max Meyer as their prime target for the summer.

The German international has become one of the hottest talents in the Bundesliga with the German club. Although yet to score this season, the 22-year-old has become an integral part of a Schalke team currently sitting sixth in the league.

Meyer is out of contract this summer and is now permitted to begin negotiating a free transfer.

The midfielder has made 142 appearances since breaking into the first team as a teenager and has been capped four times for Germany.

As reported by Liverpool Echo, Schalke CEO Christian Heidel last month declared of his young starlet:

“Max will be deciding shortly if he wants to stay at Schalke past the summer.

“Max is very happy here, Schalke is his home, we will try to make it him as comfortable financially as possible.

“He is playing the best season of his life, and the coach has found a position for him that Max didn’t believe he could play.

“Personally, I didn’t think he could either.”

Arsenal fans could see a number of midfielders leave the club this summer. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Rmasey are still yet to sign new deals, while Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka are struggling for form.
