Arsenal suffered a shock defeat in Belarus going down 1-0 to BATE Borisov in the Europa League.

The first-leg of their round of 32 clash saw Alexandre Lacazette sent off late on after catching Aleksandar Filipovic with an elbow.

Aliaksei Baga’s side were playing their first competitive match since December and doggedly held on to their lead in the second half.

On the stroke of half-time BATE went in front. Nemanja Milic’s free-kick from the right found the head of Dragun, who had evaded marker Sead Kolasinac and powered a header beyond Petr Cech.

Arsenal dominated the ball, but lacked quality in the final third. Unai Emery’s side managed just three shots on target despite enjoying nearly 77% possession.

The resolute Belarusian champions held on for the win, their first over an English side at home in European competition.

Unai Emery’s side do still have the opportunity to revive themselves – the two sides meet at the Emirates on February 21.
