This seems really odd to me. If there was a competition where they would just want to have raw numbers watching it would be this - PL teams rarely play even their second string and the stadiums are barely full as it is.
I get t with the FA Cup and PL. There is a lot of money there to sell individual games to the highest bidder because of reputation, but no-one cares about the league cup - I have to be convinced to watch a mix of Chelsea u23 vs Liverpool U23. No personal investment for me and no potential upset to be excited about.
Why not do a match choice of even 5 games where a PL team faces an EFL team? It’s a little embarrassing I think.
