It's not the formation, it's how Arteta plays Tierney when he's at LCB. There are other ways do that if Gabriel is playing LCB. The formation goes from 5-4-1 to 4-3-3 to 2-3-5. With Tierney it makes the most sense to playing him as LB during the middle phase, but that's not the only way to keep that shape.

For example, Luiz could push in to CM with Xhaka moving out to LB (where he's played on many occasions). Longer term Saliba could push forward to RB on the other side (he's played RB before). If he isn't sold Chambers would be suited to this role as well.

In my dream scenario for next season we would be buying Upamecano for this role on the right. Gabriel - Saliba - Upamecano at the back would be amazing.
