A question of loyalty, the players dilema

As we all know, out Captain is being courted by Real Madrid. Vieira has been the finest example of a midfield player since his arrival, and under the guidence of Wenger, he has matured into one of the most influential players in the world.

For this, Vieira must be grateful to Arsenal and Wenger, especially thinking about a time when he couldn't player 10 games without being sent off, including a spitting incident.

That said, Vieira has remained loyal to the club for 8 years and at 28, is entering both his golden age and the begining of the end.
Vieira will be awesome for another 3 or 4 years, then he will wilt, and become less of the forcem just like Roy Keane. Every tackle will be accompanied by commentators splirting the cliche "look at that, 32 and still hungry".

Vieira has one more big move in him. He has never known another top level football club, as at AC he was sitting around in the reserves.

In a few years, the contract situation will change. We will be offering one year extentions, while Pat will want 2. Every other game will be spent on the bench while a younger player starts.

Pat may give up his international commitments in order to play longer at club level. But in the end, ala Parlour, a move out to a smaller club or retirement is on the cards.

Where will the loyalty be then?

Lauren gave up his international career for Arsenal, as the African nations cup is played during silly times, and then there is the olympics and trips to African countries for WC qualifiers.
What does Arsenal do to repey this loyalty? Try to buy Trabelsi, who plays in the same position.

So before we attack a player who wishes to move clubs, remember that in the end, Arsenal will remain but the player is always eventually farmed out, and all loyalties end up meaning nothing apart from the Fans loyalty to the club.

Honestly, it isn't as much about being angry at his lack of loyalty as it is this:

1) Put an end to the freakin' rumours, one way or another.... the player has some responsibility after this has been going on for this long AND every freakin' single summer.

2) What is he thinking? What greater honor could there be than to bring Arsenal to even greater heights and achieve a double or treble while winning the CL? What greater excitement than to captain our team as we enter a new era in Ashburton Grove? And right at the moment when we have such sublime chemistry and have shown improvement year after year AND added some key components to help us (Reyes, RVP, Flamini, etc.)...

Right now with Arsenal, Chelsea, ManU, and even 'Pool and a few others, there is a greater concentration of great teams in one league than in any other. This is most interesting challenge in football right now - can Arsenal hold off the big-spending Chelskis? Can we continue to beat the vaunted United? Can we achieve results against all of the other EPL teams who have improved themselves? Can we win another championship this year? Can we remain undefeated AGAIN? Can we win a domestic double/treble and/or the CL?

I just don't get it. And yes, I understand about Real and the Galacticos... But Pat should take a page out of Dennis' book and rededicate himself to Arsenal glory...

Alexone is right. We should all give Vieira some slack. If he wants to leave we should respect that. come on if he does,we still earn a lot in transfer fees to find a replacement. He is not going as a FREE, he had a decency to sign a new contract last season, so he was doing the club and us a big favor, if he was all about money he could stick it out and wait for a BOSMAN.
We have shown we can still play very well without Vieira or Henry, Mourinho and Greece showed that football is still very much a team sport and tactics/ strategy is important. We have better players than Porto and Greece put together, if we can't win the treble this year that is because we didn't have enough of luck, a good enough strategy(We are particulary weak here in Europe, Mr Wenger, may I suggest you get some help here.), insufficient player commitment/morale.

Tony Adams, our last captain, self-admittedly thought about joining a team even worse - Manchester United.

People want to see loyalty, but it is more vanity than reality. It's romantic.

If players want to move on - we should gracefully accept it.

Most of us here are accepting his "imminent" departure alright. But he could have been more decisive about this matter.

This saga is dragging for far too long and the longer it drags, the less time there is for Wenger to find/groom a replacement. Especially so as we are not only looking at replacement for a CM, but also a captain.

Although it is well within the rules to leave wherever he wants up till sept, I feel that the Arsenal FC deserves something better from him for making the player that he is now

The fact Vieira has not already joined Madrid means he is being loyal.

Does no one think that if Vieira had wanted to join them that badly, the deal would not have been done.

If Pat doesn't leave, then we should be thankful, not critical over the saga

Arsenal Quotes

I still have an interest in training and development, in the stages that make it possible for players first to acquire technique (between 7 and 12) and then to develop physically (between 12 and 16), then to deepen their mental resilience (between 17 and 19) and finally between 19 and 22 to acquire what is critical, like the roof of a house without which all the rest rots away: intelligence and motivation
