I wonder when these African clubs suddenly reached a point where they feel their players are too good for trials. Taking a relatively unknown African player for a trial prior to a possible signing seemed to be a pretty common occurrence.

Has African club soccer improved much over the last couple of years?

African club soccer has improved over the years, true, especially for clubs that make the CAF champions league regularly. Granted, there are still huge variations in quality from country to country but there are more and more truly professional leagues. Growing up, the average footballer had to have a day job as well. However in this case, this is probably just the club trying to get a quick sale, or drum up more interest, methinks.
