I'm struggling to honestly justify the contract and wages we gave him back in February. He's now 30, it's not like we were tying down a player about to enter his peak years, his prime could be over. You look at the way Iwobi's been affecting games recently and you think Özil's got to at least be putting in those type of performances regularly, at the very least. The fact that we can't guarantee that tells me that we've made a massive mistake with his contract.

I also feel that this isn't the same Özil as 2013-2016, the last 2 calendar years his level has dipped dramatically. Ever since the second half of the 16/17 season. Only really Liverpool at home last is the last big performance we've really seen from him.

I won't give up though, the talent is still there, let's hope Emery can squeeze every bit of talent out of him over the next few seasons but most importantly over the course of this season.

I do hope this isn’t the start of a decline for him. He’s been subpar for a while now although he has scored a few.

Admittedly I haven’t been following us as closely as usual this season. Just saw your post @Tir Na Nog and it echoes my thoughts, always been a moments player but they’re becoming increasingly rare.

Mods are unethical! Özil, come assist me please!
Seems like a great human being.

Him and and his agent both won - great 350K per week contract - good job. It seems pointless to talk about it as nothing will change. I knew it was a cancerous contract from the start - but Wenger and Gaz screwed up one more time before they left.

I hope Özil continues with the end product this season. Hopefully he can get close to 15 goals. If he scores that, we probably win the Premier League.

We won't win the PL even if he scores 30 goals this season.

We're far away from the title.

If we add Mesut's 30 goals to Lacazette's and Aubameyang's combined 60, that would make close to a hundred goals from just 3 players. Might get us close to a league title.
;)

But tell me, Mr. DasBootist. What good are goals, if you’re unable… to win?

You need to look at the bigger picture. We didn't sign him on for solely his performances. You need to think about what he is worth to the club.

Firstly his age. Does his play-style rely on physical output? It doesn't. Mesut Özil at 33 will have the same quality at 30, as his game doesn't rely on pace or physical prowess. He will pick up more niggles, but age wise it makes sense to invest in him.

His star status can't be downplayed or underestimated. Fans appreciate Özil less than footballers do. Every play is in awe of him that has been a teammate of his. Torreira took the number 11 just so he could sit next to him in the changing room. He attracts players.

His performance has been consistent, but he is always misunderstood. He is an unselfish creator. A lot of his output is based on players finishing. He had a decent output considering who he was surrounded by. The better players around him the better he performs.

I won't judge him this season until Ramsey is benched and Özil isn't forced to play out wide.

Özil at 10 And Emery Out
De Bruyne needs 6 assists in 41 games to break that record of being fastest to 50 assists so I doubt that stat will be valid much longer. I love Mesut but is he really the best playmaker of a generation? Maybe 5 years ago but not since he has joined us imo.
One had to play with Giroud and Welbeck and the other is playing with Aguero, sterling, Jesus etc.

If any other player could boast these stats then our fans would fawn over them nonstop. It’s not his fault that he’s been playing with absolute dross for the past 6 years. None of the players mentioned in this thread would do any better in Mesut’s position. They have all been in teams with loads of players with equal or superior talent to them. None of them are expected to carry the team like mesut is because they don’t need to.

I’m personally grateful that he choose to waste his prime years on playing with Walcott, giroud, xhaka, mustafi and co at this club when he could’ve been elsewhere winning major honors. Don’t think it was really worth it from a fotballing perspective since he’s pretty much hated by half the fan base but he’s been paid very handsomely so he can’t really complain at the end of the day.

Actually don't think Rooney is horrible bastard ' Giggs on the otherhand qualifies he done something even hardened crims wouldn't do .

Yep.

Ronaldo's billed as the ultimate pro doing sit-ups at 3am in his bedroom, but he's also had a thing for paying high class escorts/models for sex regularly. Not knocking it, dabbled in it myself on the odd occasion :lol:but regardless of charity work or PR nobody really knows what even the quietest and most model pro's do behind closed doors.

Jermaine Pennant went out night before the Southampton game, got drunk, took a girl home, up all night, turned up to the game still drunk/hungover expecting to be at most be on the bench and he started and scored a first half hat-trick. Ashley Cole also lived a similar lifestyle and he was consistently unbelievable!

There is an unwritten rule that you should never embarrass your missus in public and Rooney did that in the most spectacular way possible.

If either of them were playing for us and playing well on the pitch when these stories broke I wouldn't bat an eyelid TBH. But then again my moral compass is a bit, erm, askew.

Anyway back to Özil.....Nice guy or not he has looked really low on the pitch this season, like the weight of the world is on his shoulders. Not sure if playing him in his position of choice is going to fix that.
