I see this as a Joel Matip type signing for us. Can be a solid backup with starting potential till we get a legit CB to tag team with Saliba. We just need to find our Van Dijk. Centre Backs take time to mature, so let's not be debbie downers without seeing him play till the end of this season. We just need stability in the back, which he most likely can provide and relegate Mustafi to backup till end of season.

This is what Tim Vickery, South American football expert for the BBC and ESPN, wrote about Mari after the Copa Libertadores semifinal:

And the attacking approach is made possible by the high defensive line, commanded by the Spanish centre-back Pablo Mari.

The 26-year-old was signed from Manchester City, who had parked him on loan at Deportivo La Coruna. Given City's defensive problems this year, they could have made a mistake letting him go, because he has been a vital part of the Jorge Jesus jigsaw. Without his capacity to play in and organize a high line, the team would be stretched out and vulnerable, with a gaping hole in front of the defence. The steadiness of the Spaniard allows the two veteran full-backs, Rafinha and Filipe Luis, to spend more time in the opponent's half than in their own, constructing the play from the back.

I can see why Arteta, who would certainly be familiar with him since he was on City's books, might want this guy.

Tim Vickery is one of best journalists around.

As long as he doesn’t make the braindead mistakes Mustafi does then it’s an instant upgrade on him. Sokratis and Luiz are probably gone within the next year as well so we’re going to need more defenders going forward.

Is this guy as good as Matip though?
Don't make it seem like Matip was bad before coming to Liverpool when he's actually been pretty good before.

Not familiar with the player but sounds like a David Luiz backup to me, the way he's been described. Left-footed ball-playing defender.

Just heard from sources that the way Edu and Sanllehi identified Mari was using an algorithm: CB with Spanish and Brazilian connection and he was the only result from the search. No idea what to make of it, but there you go.

Cant stand this signing. Slow and weak 1v1. Literally has disaster written all over it in England.

Yeah you say that, but he kept a clean sheet against Liverpool’s front 3 for 90 minutes so he can’t be that hampered by being slow (no idea how slow he is). Being slow isn’t so bad if your positioning and reading of the play is good.

If we're getting him for less than £10M, I can see some sense in this now the gin has wore off a bit.

At the very least he's tall so (hopefully) gives us some much needed aerial ability, and left footed so that gives us some balance.

With the market very limited in the window, signing him for a low fee in January allows us to assess him & see how he settles, without being prohibitive if we fancy taking a bigger splurge in the summer on an Upamecano type signing.

Let's judge the lad on how he plays for us, not on price tags or current standing.

Arsenal Quotes

Arsenal are the most beautiful club in England. At Man City and Chelsea, they will never have that class and style.
