“Newcastle want to make me sign a contract extension, indeed. I’m waiting to see what they’re going to offer me,” Bassong told Foot Mercato.

“My agent quickly told me about Arsenal’s interest. But it’s not the moment to speak about it. I must be focused on my football and on the end of the season, we will see what happens then.

“At the moment I’m 100 percent focused on Newcastle and I don’t see any reason why this would change.

“But I would lie if I said that Arsenal are not a club I’m interested in. But many things can happen before we can speak about a transfer.”

How good is this player.I haven't seen him play, really...

But even their best players, I am not sure would be good enough defensively for us

There was a rumour a day or two ago linking us to him, his agent showed him the story and he's responding. This is how the press make a living.

It's worrying when every average player is linked to the club. Hopefully the quality signings like Arshavin can boost the profile of our club in the transfer window.

If Newcastle get relegated I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Newcatle probably rate his highly because hes half decent.

A big, strong, half decent, centre half is something they haven't had for a decade. Thats probably half the reason there ranting about him.

If anything, I haven't seen a really good game to pesuade me otherwise, and also there are a lot better centre halfs such as Richards, although he might cost more then Wenger is willing to part with, and also the likes of Distin at portsmouth too are all a level above Bassong.

Newcastle fans are absolutely raving about him there. Can't say I've noticed him much, but if he's big, strong, quick and as positionally sound as the Geordie's are saying there, then he may be worth a look.
