Systems Football

These articles are about sytems football and in particular Tiki Taka & Total Football.

As such IMO they are also representative of AW's underlying philosophies regarding his style of play at AFC. Not just in terms of technical quality or the lack of match day tactics, nor even in the strict adherence to possession based passing football but also in terms of the various elements of the high defensive line, the variations of the pressing style and so forth.

Perhaps too in these articles we can also recognise some of the flaws in AW's methodologies or application in regards to player development or instruction via game time to develop player football intelligence,
and consequently why AW's approach has been more successful with mature/developed players to date.

The same writer produced another article regarding Brendan Rodger's approach, and then an analysis of where this went wrong against us.

Lol - thought that with the recent debate re match day tactics, the Bould Defence etc that it may be worth a look at some of the philosophies involved in the system approach AW favours.

Slightly off-topic, since I'll be talking about my tactics in FM2012...

I never knew that my tactics is actually "Systems Football".

My two backup tactics are roughly the same compared to my primary one, the difference is the roles of some of the midfielders or the number of strikers.

Fantastic articles Anzac, I learned some good stuff there. Even as a spectator, having a better tactical understanding makes observing the matches all the more enjoyable. Plus you get to chuckle condescendingly at others who know less... :D

I didn't realise we had a Premier League manager on the forum!

Welcome, Tony Pulis.

Thanks for the links Anzac.

I read the articles on Pool.

Really busy so a few comments:

Think the describe 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 midfield pointing backwards (1 DMF), the zone description is nice but hardly adds anything. It's obvious the 2CDs have different roles as the fullbacks. Apart from that the zones aren't static, like in modern 4-3-3/4-1-4-1.

Had a good laugh mapping the Pool team playing v us vs the requirements described.

Have a question to someone who watched Swansea more closely last season. Was Williams playing like a libero (they put it in '' in the zone 2 description), the way Beckenbauer used to. Think the old fashioned libero was used to have an additional coming player who timed his pushes forward to create an extra man at the right time in an otherwise pretty rigid tactical system. Would it be Agger who has to do that?
