Bishop Auckland 4 : Radcliffe Borough 0
19 February, 2005

Team: Roberts, Coulthard, Foster (Ward 76mins), Bell, Hall, Neil Wilkinson, Robson, Salvin, Sheeran, Woodhouse, Morgan

Bishops again named an unchanged side with new signing Michael Ward on the bench on this bitterly cold day at the Brewery Field.

Immediately on the attack kicking down the hill, early pressure saw the ball break to Salvin who blasted home a superb low shot from the edge of the area on 4 minutes to give Bishops the lead.

On the quarter hour Bishops almost doubled their lead. Salvin crossed for Sheeran to head goalwards, but his downward header lost pace on the muddy surface allowing a Borough defender to slice it once again goalward. Radcliffe's 'keeper cam to the rescue with a stretching save to push the ball over the bar.

The second goal arrived after sustained Two Blues pressure and Hall attacked a Morgan corner and headed home powerfully from close range.

Radcliffe had their only chance of the half just before the interval when a fierce cross was deflected just over the bar.

Salvin guaranteed the win just after the restart. Sheeran played the ball in for Salvin to strike a shot from 20 yards. The 'keeper dived but the inconsistent bounce of the sadly neglected Brewery Field surface saw the ball skip over his outstretched arms to the delight of the Bishops faithful behind the goal.

Snow arrived as the half continued, and Bishops pressure was unrelenting. Woodhouse was unlucky to see a shot saved well, and a Sheeran shot was parried to safety by the overworked Radcliffe custodian.

Woodhouse came close again when his shot from 10 yards was blocked but spun wildly towards the goal. The ball was cleared to safety by what looked suspiciously like a defender's hand.

Woodhouse added a fourth when he lobbed clinically when put through. Ward replaced Foster soon after, and almost got his name on the score sheet when he beat his man on the left and fired just wide from a tight angle.

Bishops biggest league win for almost four years, and arguably the best Bishops performance under Brian Honour's control. Although other results leave Bishops on the foot of the table, the last three performance give real hope that relegation will be avoided. All we have to do is keep playing like this.
