ARSENAL are considering a shock move for Owen Hargreaves if he is released by Manchester United at the end of the season.

But it is more likely the injury-plagued England midfielder will stay at Old Trafford, on a pay-as-you-play deal, for another season.

Gunners boss Arsène Wenger has been an admirer of Hargreaves, 30, since his Bayern Munich days and is keeping an eye on the situation.

Hargreaves, a £17million signing from Bayern four years ago, has been restricted to only 39 appearances for United in his time at the club – mainly because of tendonitis in both knees.

But while that condition has improved, his latest problems have been a hamstring injury – which forced him out of his only senior appearance this season after just six minutes – and more recently shoulder damage that he suffered in training.

Last season, Hargreaves’ only first-team appearance was as a substitute in the 93rd minute at Sunderland, where he didn’t even manage to kick the ball.

His United career looked like ending in the summer, when he is out of contract.

But due to the improvement in his knees, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could now sanction a new one-year deal.

The midfielder, who has been capped 42 times by England, has been in talks with Old Trafford chief executive David Gill.

Hargreaves is thinking about taking that option as he feels he is in debt to United because of his limited number of appearances since his arrival at the club in 2007.

And I thought Woodgate to Arsenal in January '11 was the stupidest rag rumour.

Arsenal Quotes

The coach's role is to make the player understand everything that serves the interest of the game. To do this he must speak to the child within each player, to the adolescent he was and the adult he is now. Too often a coach tends only to speak to the adult, issuing commands for performance, for victory, for reflection, to the detriment of the child who is playing for pleasure, living in the present.
