Arsenal defender William Saliba is reportedly a transfer target for Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

THE LOWDOWN: IMPECCABLE SALIBA

Saliba arrived at Arsenal in 2019 as a highly-rated prospect from the French Ligue 1 but never had the opportunity to feature for the Gunners. He spent the best part of the last three years on loan at French sides Saint-Etienne, OGC Nice and Olympique de Marseille.

His last spell at OM helped horn his football skills and his growth over the course of last season saw him win accolades in his native France and also a first call-up to the French National team.

Now back at Arsenal, he was able to convince Mikel Arteta during preseason and has grown to become a regular and an important member of the squad.

Amid talks and speculation about his future at the Emirates, a report has claimed that a Spanish club plots to come for his signature next summer, when his contract is expected to expire.

THE LATEST: SPANISH INTEREST

Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are considering a move for William Saliba next summer.

The Frenchman has been a revelation this season for Arsenal and has formed an excellent partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes at the heart of the defence but his future still hangs in the balance.

Spanish news outlet Fichajes claim Atletico are keeping tabs on Saliba with boss Diego Simeone a huge admirer.

According to the report, Simeone is searching for a new central defender with the likes of Jose Maria Gimenez, Stefan Savic and Felipe underperforming this term, with Atletico crashing out of the Champions League and missing out on a Europa League spot this week.

Atletico missed out on Saliba in 2019 when he joined the Gunners from Saint-Etienne for £27million. It appears the player is still on Atletico’s radar, with the Spanish side reportedly keeping track of his progress.

However, Fichajes believe the youngster is untouchable and is expected to sign a new deal at the Emirates.

THE VERDICT: HERE TO STAY

Saliba’s stock has risen at the Emirates since the season started and he is currently enjoying his time in North London. As expected, clubs will be looking toward his direction, knowing that he is in the final year of his contract.

Recently, Arsenal opened up discussions over a new deal with him so as to keep him away from clubs hoping to snap him up and that has been progressing nicely.
