Great point, the process isn't that far yet. But one point is that they tried to buy Luiz as an emergency buy for 25 million, and UCL is worth like 30 million? So they would have bought at least a top midfielder if we had got top 4.

If we were in the Champions League, we (at minimum) would need a close to starting 11 CF (Eddie isn't good enough for that level) to rotate with Gabby, a starting 11 winger (as good as ESR and Gabby are, we would need more guarantees at that level) and a new CM (after Mo's injury) in addition to bringing Jesus/Fabio/Olek in.

Don't think we could spend that much to be honest, surely FFP would be on us.

Everything is going in the right direction now though, so happy enough...if we get Champions League this season, we will have had enough time to fix the squad depth to an acceptable level.

Just gotta get through this sticky patch (which I believe we will) it was never gonna be us winning every match and playing super well anyway, every team has form like this, time for us to show we have some character in the squad...be in a good position up to the World Cup and go again!

Hope you're right, I just worry that the team is mentally weak and so these results will cause a spiral down. Win the next two though and we should have confidence going into Chelsea.

I have said it before, but it's a Godsend in hindsight that we bottled 4th last season...would have been ****ed if we were in it now.

We basically culled the squad down to like only 11 very good players last season, we went for a reset...which in fairness, is kinda working...

2021/2022...small squad due to no Europe, get back in the Top 6 after two years of being crap, build it from there.

2022/2023...start to beef up the squad (Jesus, Zinchecko, Saliba returning etc) get younger players games in a less demanding European comp either to get them ready for the Champions League next season or to sell.

Imagine us in a Champions League group with Elneny out since his injury, Partey would have had to play every match...one of his legs would have exploded by now, ffs 😅

Our squad would have been ****ed if we got 4th last season, we wouldn't have been able do bring in the amount of players we would need either, would have been too much for just 1 window.

NEED some signings before next season, past our 11 in certain areas is not Champions League quality.
Would it really been too much to get a few extra players?

We signed:
Jesus
Zinchenko
Vieira.

Marquinhos and Turner were done long before and weren't really significant buys.

I think we could have added another wide player and a midfielder on top of the main 3 signings.

5 signings isn't that much. An extra 60-70m maybe. And that would have been the extra money from CL along with sponsorship extras.

I do agree that maybe some, if not all, of these players needed some experience of twice a week and tasting European football.

But if we do make CL next season we will need minimum 5 new players.

- Proper back up GK
- 2 Central midfielders ideal 1 holder 1 box to box
- Striker
-Wide player

Defence I think we are OK strength and depth wise if Tierney/Zinc/Tomi don't continue to be injury prone.

They're not going to buy a GK straight after unless Turner shows this season that he is a total horror show. He improved a lot already in a couple of games, so not much hope for you there.

I think we will either see a top striker or a top winger, not both. ESR is in our team still, surely they will still try to get him fit. And there is the nice problem to have with Balogun.

Norton-Cuffy will come back so defence is totally sorted if Saliba extends.

Yeah defence I agree.

Personally I see:
Striker: Jesus, Eddie, New signing
Wide: Gabi, ESR, Saka, New signing.
Mid 6/8: Partey, Xhaka, New signing x 2.

Get rid of Nelson, send Marquinhos on loan. Give Balogun another loan.

I'm just not convinced by Turner but I could be wrong.

Remember Zinchenko can play 6 and 8, so having Tierney/Tomi/Zin shouldn't in theory be a problem as it allows adequate cover for midfield and LB, but Zinny is always injured

What is far more likely is that we'll get one CM that is sort of a hybrid 6/8 (if possible) and a forward that is a hybrid forward in the Jota/Jesus mould, to provide cover across multiple positions while reducing issues around players being annoyed they aren't playing enough.

Yeah but do we want to keep signing flexible players at the cost of specific brilliance. There has to come a time when we stop trying to buy jack of all trades and sign specialists.

If we get CL football players need to know that the level of competition has just increased. They either up their level or park their ass on the bench. If they aren't happy with being on they bench then they aren't happy with being part of a competitive CL team with PL ambitions. Players cant have it all. If they want guarantees they can go sign for Brighton.

It all depends on funds. But basically isn't the normal aim to have 2 good players for each position? Will Nketiah and ESR get enough game-time for them not only to lose their value and stop development? Pretty sure they don't sell them next summer yet. ESR value will be low after his injuries.

If we can sell Sambi and get Tielemans for free, it could help us in your plan for having funds for two attackers.

But basically a top DMF and a top attacker (either a winger or a striker) will cost 50-100 million each. So let's say 150 million for both, so it's almost the assumed whole budget. I'd really want top quality at this point. We need a great goal scorer striker or a winger who can dribble and score. Those are expensive. So are Partey level DMF's.

When you are in the CL and wanting to compete for the league you have to be ruthless.

You can't wait for ESR and Eddie to mature. You need performances now.

Where we are at the minute we can wait. But Eddie has been **** in EL this season. ESR form dipped hugely. Those are 2 players that may end up being sold.

Liverpool have Jota, Nunez and Firmino for number 9.

We need Jesus, A new signings and Eddie 3rd choice.

We have Saka and Martinelli wide. We have no replacement for Saka. So we need a wide player.

Again i will repeat. If we are playing CL football and competing for the league there isn't 1 player in the starting line up who has a guaranteed place. It has to be competitive.

Our profligacy in front of goal is going to be our ultimate undoing.

Does Tets not have them practice shooting in training?

We have a quality attack, but also a very young and unproven one.

Compare Jesus-Saka-Martinelli to our rivals, and it's just not as reliable despite how exciting it is.

Auba-Laca/Sanchez-Giroud/ Van Persie-Walcott etc...no matter how you rate some of these players, you knew all would get you double figures no matter what.

The Emirates era hasn't been as good as the Highbury one, but we have always had goalscorers in it...at the minute a lot of our players haven't quite found that little bit of consistency in front of goal yet.

Don't think there has ever been so much pressure on 1 forward in Jesus before, everyone outside him are pretty much kids.

Could do with an experienced CF in Jan, though feel we will wait until next summer.

Why not loan Marquinhos, let go of Nelson (if he doesn't improve massively), get Balogun back and buy a top starting level goal scoring attacker?

Would leave more funds for a top midfielder if trying/trusting own youth as backup/rotation. Midfield needs much improvement.

Because having Eddie, Balogun and Jesus as number 9 is ****. We need a winger and a striker if we are in the CL next season. Balogun on loan and Jesus and new number 9 fight it out between them. Like what Nunez is doing at Liverpool with Jota and Firmino.

You need 18 players that you can comfortably rotate without dropping the level.

Easiest team to counter in Europe, 4 Van Goghs in transfers and we got Partey and F all in defensive midfield. No midfield control again for 3 straight match. Leeds, Soton, and PSV. It is clear the managers in world football have already sussed out that Arteta is some moronic Don Quixote aided by his Sancho Panza Edu, in trying to recreate the 90s ball of their youth. As the AM draft established only a tosser building a video game side plays in an attacking 3-3-4, with two number 10s and asks a guy who played whole career in a double pivot to play in a single pivot. We can’t control midfield against Leeds or Soton and teams from farmers leagues
