Arteta kind of does this already. It’s what allows Saka to get so far forward when playing LB but we basically play with a back three.

I don’t think it matters that much actually. As long as we can progress up to the final third and sustain pressure then it doesn’t matter if it’s a 433 or whatever on paper. We’re doing the first part well under Arteta but we are struggling with the latter at the moment as we don’t have enough technical ability in attack.

The most important thing is that Arteta wants to attack with 5 players and defend with 5 in possession. Those 5 attacking players will be a striker, two attacking midfielders in the half spaces or most likely AM + wide playmaker on the left in our case and lastly two wingers hugging the touchline (LB and RW in our case).

If we sign Partey then i believe it’s going to be Xhaka and Partey or Partey + two #10s like City play in the future.
Saliba Luiz/Mari
RB Partey Xhaka
Pepe Özil ST LW(Willian?) LB

Yeah this is what I'm pretty much thinking too. A midfield three of Partey-Torreira-Guendouzi is the furthest thing from what Arteta is trying to achieve.

I find it interesting that you have Özil starting because I think a lot of people are hoping he won't be starting next season but I think the reality is that he will be purely because we won't get any better than him.

If he’s not moved on then we would have to get two players in that position to keep him out of the starting 11. I don’t really see that happening tbqh.

If the season is cancelled altogether, will the transfer window open up immediately?

WoW! Guendouzi and Willock are getting some very rough treatment. I wouldn't swap Douzi, Willock, Ceballos and ESR for any other young quintet in Europe and I'm including Barcelona in that. Ceballos is the only one good enough to start regularly though and he isn't even our player.

Willock and ESR are technically very good and Guendouzi doesn't shirk. He's something of a leader in our team and that is scary.

Xhaka, Torreria and Özil aren't leading though and it makes our young players look like they aren't developing well.

We need a player of the calibre of Partey or Tolliso.

City do it and are racking up 100 points in a season. Why can’t we do it?
Fernandinho was a beast of a CM.

They also dont it regularly this season and lost the title.

Xhaka was never a beast of a CM

We do it regularly and we might be in a relegation battle?

Yeah we don't have the culture of hard work and tactical understanding to pull it off. Yet. Hopefully, Arteta can install some of it in our club in the next two years!

@Tir Na Nog also posted a video of Lacazette switching off during the game. That is a habit amongst our players. Not just our strikers who are all lazy but Xhaka switch off constantly during the game and our defenders.

There is a lot of work to do before we can pull of some of these tactics on constant basis!

We wouldn’t do it with Xhaka as DM. That’s why we’re looking to sign Partey?

Is Partey a DM? I thought he was as a defensively minded box 2 box player?
Simeone plays a 442 so there’s no single pivot DM in that system if that’s what you’re talking about. I guess your description works in the context of that system although I believe he also has the qualities to play DM in Arteta’s.

I quite like the idea of Torreira as DM, Partey as defensive B2B and then an attacking B2B that can also play CAM. I'm not convinced specialist CAM's work that well in modern football. (other than false 9's)

In fairness, if you watch a lot of Özil and Willock since Arteta's taken over, they're playing very aggressively and dropping deeper - almost like #8s.

Guendouzi as a deep playmaker

Super wary about this. If we're going with that limited role and will use a player already at the club, it's got to be Xhaka. Guendouzi is so unbelievably green behind the ears.

Also as you mention yourself a setup like that desperatly needs a creative outlet on the left, and at best a creative outlet at CF.
