I think Renato Sanches is a bit misunderstood. He is more offensive than he is defensive and the reason he can do the defensive part of the game is because he is athletic. Sabitzer is in the 90th percentile for progressive passing. So is Renato Sanches, but where they differ is carries. Sanches is in the 90th for carries also. In England, if you have a midfielder than can dribble, carry, pass and win the ball, you can dominate the midfield.Agree with most of the above. I still think as @Heavy Duty Rom points our that we’d benefit from a player with a little more vision and passing ability than Sanches, who I also think is still a bit raw and not consistent enough. If we’re looking at a 4231 like your example I’d go for Sabitzer as Partey’s partner in the pivot. We give up some athleticism and some carrying/dribbling but gain better progressive passing and a right footed set piece specialist.
I know you were initially speaking about this line up for the first game, but curious to learn how you envision it looking with Saka back. Something like
White - Mari/Gabriel
Adams - Partey - CM
Pépé - ESR - Saka - Tierney
Abraham/Auba
??
My vision is totally different from Artetas and most people on here. I'd like to see Saka left and Pepe right when he comes back so hopefully Arteta does that.
Personally I feel Saka is best as a left 8, with the freedom to go wide.
Martinelli--------------Cf---------------Pepe
-----------Saka---------------------ESR
-------------------------Partey
So when we talk positional play, I think if it was well drilled which it should be with 1 game a week, you could build the above team and have them be fluid.
For example, Martinelli can move infield, Saka overlap wide, Tierney tuck in. Similar to how Atalanta play. Literally overload the flanks, switch the play and rotate positions constantly where even the Cf can appear in central midfield. Just do it with a 4 3 3 instead of a 352 because we have someone like Partey.
