Agree with most of the above. I still think as @Heavy Duty Rom points our that we’d benefit from a player with a little more vision and passing ability than Sanches, who I also think is still a bit raw and not consistent enough. If we’re looking at a 4231 like your example I’d go for Sabitzer as Partey’s partner in the pivot. We give up some athleticism and some carrying/dribbling but gain better progressive passing and a right footed set piece specialist.

I know you were initially speaking about this line up for the first game, but curious to learn how you envision it looking with Saka back. Something like

White - Mari/Gabriel
Adams - Partey - CM
Pépé - ESR - Saka - Tierney
Abraham/Auba

??
I think Renato Sanches is a bit misunderstood. He is more offensive than he is defensive and the reason he can do the defensive part of the game is because he is athletic. Sabitzer is in the 90th percentile for progressive passing. So is Renato Sanches, but where they differ is carries. Sanches is in the 90th for carries also. In England, if you have a midfielder than can dribble, carry, pass and win the ball, you can dominate the midfield.

My vision is totally different from Artetas and most people on here. I'd like to see Saka left and Pepe right when he comes back so hopefully Arteta does that.

Personally I feel Saka is best as a left 8, with the freedom to go wide.

Martinelli--------------Cf---------------Pepe

-----------Saka---------------------ESR

-------------------------Partey

So when we talk positional play, I think if it was well drilled which it should be with 1 game a week, you could build the above team and have them be fluid.

For example, Martinelli can move infield, Saka overlap wide, Tierney tuck in. Similar to how Atalanta play. Literally overload the flanks, switch the play and rotate positions constantly where even the Cf can appear in central midfield. Just do it with a 4 3 3 instead of a 352 because we have someone like Partey.

I also prefer Saka on the left and posted the exact line up some days ago, so I guess there we really see eye to eye 🤙

For me I’d go 433 with the above or have a new player for LCM and play Saka at LW. Then it’s Aouar > Sabitzer > Sanches for that spot.

I've mentioned a few times about Saka as an 8 in a 433, I think he would be fantastic there and I'm not sure he scores or assists enough to play as one of the front 3 at the moment. I would back Martinelli to score and assist more than Saka as the left sided forward player. You could easily rest one of Saka/ESR and play Partey at 8 with a more defensively minded midfielder in games where we need to be a bit more solid defensively.

It was also why I was wish listing Marcus Thuram as a left forward to compete with Martinelli rather than a 10/8 earlier in the summer.

Someone like Marcus Thuram as a left forward basically means you can get away with a Cf who lacks in aerial ability, but has everything else.

Thuram--------Martinelli/Auba------Pepe

If you go long you go long to Thuram who will have the beating in the air of every right back in the league.

Imagine the space Auba would have with a CB who gets dragged across to deal with Thuram.

What has that got to do with an inverted full back? There are so many occasions where he is on the touchline playing an angled ball for Bellerin to run inside.

Even during build up Bellerin is inside Pepe.

I honestly think you watch a different team in red. Because that isn't how we play at all. The right back goes beyond Pepe 9 times out of 10 and whoever is RW which was usually Pepe cuts inside and does their thing. Same thing happened when Saka was out there.

The europa league games showed good heat maps of how we wanted to play. Where everyone was on point, Laca dropped deep, the two wide forwards cut in and the two full backs bombed on. Whoever the DM was then dropped into the back 3.

So where are we at...

20 days until the first game of the season.
28 days until Chelsea at home.
38 days until the window slams shut.

We desperately need Xhaka out the door and a new CM in next week. I think things start moving heavily next week onwards, cameras start rolling for the amazon doc, it'll all tie in. Ben White coming through the door at the same time.

Where are we at? We haven't improved the starting 11, at all. Infact, you take Ødegaard, Luiz and Ceballos out and we currently weaker than last season.

1. White hasn't signed yet.
2. I wouldn't call him an immediate improvement on Luiz just yet.
3. As inconsistent as Ceballos was, he's still probably more ready for the PL than Lokonga atm.

White hasn't officially signed but the deals done so we can include it 😂

Holding was our main RCB last season. So White is quite a big upgrade.

Lokonga on the face of it is an improvement on having Ceballos as backup. A guy who wasn't even our player.

Bro, Ceballos is a Real Madrid player, a player with years of experience, including 2 seasons in the PL now. It's highly unlikely Lokonga is an upgrade right now.

many years ago we were linked with an Iranian youngster called Sardar azmoun. He has turned into quality player now and been best striker in Russian league. I love his playing style. This guy would be beast in the PL
looks like he fights in ufc

In my opinion, our back line would need to be about... 28x better than it is right now to make that team work. Especially given the ball retention of those forwards, and assuming Tierney will be right up there with them.

The thought of my heart as Pepe looks the ball again the attacking third and we're looking at the 16th opposing counter running towards Mari, Holding, and Cedric...

Can we please get a big CM signing now ?
Have that one done with some preps and maybe sneak the super talent RB from Chelsea and I'm fine with doing the rest over the course of the next weeks.

We need thaat ****ing CM, in truth, we really do need 2. Bissouma+Aouar profile wise I'd say, dont care about the names at this point.

Arsenal Quotes

When I first came to Arsenal, I realised the back four were all university graduates in the art of defending. As for Tony Adams, I consider him to be a doctor of defence. He is simply outstanding.
