Football’s Gambling Problem

Reckon this is a bigger problem than people think tbh, from my time playing it was rampant but we weren't exactly making life-changing money so the direct impact of these things were much bigger.

I've personally seen criminal elements try and force people to do dodgy things. The problem with this kind of stuff is in terms of betting the size of the specific game barely matters outside of betting sites putting up red flags if huge bets randomly come in on some Taiwanese 4th tier matches, so gangs can somewhat easily get in direct contact with players, their families etc.

This is honestly scary to think about, and quite easy to happen--even with referees.

Very good but sad piece from Merse on Soccer Saturday. He also did a documentary on it for the BBC a few years ago that's worth checking out. A horrible addiction.

All the more baffling that football allow betting companies to advertise.

Reports Tonali will get 10 months. Back for next season if it's immediate.

Nothing about Zaniolo from what I've read.

Looking forward to Tonali being banned, not sure why he hasn’t yet?

Don’t see the issue here? He’s at the casino.

The betting talk is more about people in football gambling on football. I thought anyway.
He was giving money to someone to bet on Serie B matches on his behalf. Thats not allowed.

Don't see any issue unless you are betting on your own games, let gamblers cook
I take ur point but footballers have friends on other teams so could ask them for 'favours'

Plenty of things they can gamble on other than football.
I used to be a big gambler when younger but most of my money went on horses and down the Casino.

There are loads of other sports to bet on rather than the one they do for a living.

Which coach is evil enough and has the media and authorities in a chokehold like that?

Sports betting is quite risky thing. I've personally seen friends and family get caught up in the excitement of placing bets on games, sometimes to the point where it affects their enjoyment of the sport.

Arsenal Quotes

An Arsenal fan, when you finish fourth, will say, “Hey, we’ve been in the top four for twenty years. We want to win the league!”. They don’t care that Manchester City or Chelsea have spent 300 or 400 million euros. They just want to beat them.
But if you finish fifteenth two years running, they will be happy if you finish fourth after that.
