International Football Can Be Quite Good, Sometimes...

You trying to start ANOTHER Cesc v Mesut debate ;)

Spain 2010 was better, but I preferred watching the Germany 2014 team more...actually preferred Spain in 2008 and Germany in 2010 if I'm honest, that Spain Euro 2008 winning team is one of the best teams I have seen.

Not this time, just curious what is your view on that

It was tough call for me.Germany was more convincing in their winning WC,while Spain probably had better team, but won most games with 1-0 with more possession and great individual quality.

Agree with you on Germany 2010.They played fluent football and changed their tactic in 2014.

Miss the days of young Wayne Rooney when he was England's golden boy. He was such a ferocious little **** those days.

You can even see it when he was 10 years old, his hairline was finished but such a tough player.

You're not kidding - that's the worst hairline I've seen on someone below 20

Good stuff, my memories of the 2002 WC are a bit strange since I think I was half asleep for most games due to the time difference.

South Korea really had big ref help against Italy and they ruined that WC because they were hosts.

Surprised how Germany get to the final to be fair.I remember that team was quite weaker than generation that came in next years ( from 2004 to 2014 ).Brazil was just on another level in that year.

Yeah, Germany surprised me too but Kahn was unreal at times and you know Klose always turned up at the WC.

Yep,Kahn was really in top shape and i remember some top saves against USA.He saved our ass in that game and we went to semi-final.

And Klose is one of rare players that had better international career than club career:lol:.He always found his form in big international competitions.

My school allowed us to watch some games, as it was basically summer holidays anyway!

I remember the refs being dodgy, but I genuinely didn't remember South Korea being a bunch of dirty pieces of ****...that guy who kicks Maldini on the back of the head when he is on the ground, absolute scumbag.

Anyone else want to admit to getting "that" Ronaldo haircut that summer...10 year old me thought I was so cool

One of those matches that is hard to forget. Two best European nations in football with top players on both sides in that World Cup.Italy just got it at the end.Probably good match for neutral to see.

You're German!

The plot thickens over you stance on Cesc v Mesut even more

Were you able to go to any matches at the 2006 World Cup?

Yeah .Ich bin aus Deutschland

Well,i was big fan of Mesut when he was in national team and he produced some magic moments in WC 2010 when most top clubs wanted him.But really Cesc was much better in Arsenal,so that's hard to compare.

No unfortunately, wanted to go to Germany vs Argentina in Berlin, but i couldn't get ticket. That year killed me in football sense.First Arsenal lost final in Paris and than Germany lost in semi-final in their own country.Wanted France to win because of Henry and Zidane and that ****** Materazzi really pissed me off at the end.Still, respect Italy for their great defending and top players in those years.

The '94 World Cup was amazing! Staying up for games, buying the sports newspapers at 6AM and debating the results while drinking an espresso at a sidewalk café.

It was the re-birth of attacking football in the World Cup and a tremendous development exercise for the country of porn and juicy burgers.

Colombia had an interesting team and it was the perfect time to bet on the funky combination of Asprilla, Valderrama and Rincon. Once you read Colombian literature, drink Colombian coffee and have sex with a Colombian woman you'll realise that you were born in the wrong country.
Shame that they were a subject of ego-battles between drug lords. Right after the Romania match, Chonto Herrera got a message from his family: his brother had been killed.

Maradona being kicked out for failing a drug test and Roberto Baggio missing that penalty broke my heart. I'm over it now. Man starts over again everyday, in spite of all he knows, against all he knows. Hagi should have been named the MVP of the tournament. He was the guts, heart and soul of Romania's team.

Roger Milla, the mercurial grandpa doing the makossa dance was another exotic highlight. He listens to jazz, eats Cameroonian spinach and drinks fruit juice.

Fortunately the colorless and humorless Germans failed to win this one. Icke Hassler and Lothar Matthaus are the only players worth mentioning. The others were good corporate workers. As entertaining as Hegel's ''Phenomenology of Spirit''. Although the deadlines, the long work hours, the constant pressure to be more efficient than the others and the expectation to keep growing at an insane pace won them four World Cups and three Euros. Dull and boring employees of the month.

The late 80s and early 90s was a great period when you could truly appreciate skill, finesse, dribbling, technique, vision and passing. When you are following players such as Platini, Maradona, Romario, Laudrup, Baggio, Hagi, Stoichkov or Bergkamp you can no longer think of Griezmann, Hazard, Kroos, De Bruyne or Modric as world-class. The terms ''elite and world-class'' are thrown around with such an annoying ease. It was a time when technique and dribbling meant more than showing off your abs on the cover of Men's Health. I don't want to see athletes on the pitch, there's track & field for that, I want to see ball mastery.

Some of the young studs have no references and/or are not interested in former players and they end up believing that Kante is the epitome of a defensive midfielder while glossing over Frank Rijkaard...

the nostalgia about the ball got me thinking about this tournament again @Riou. Those were the days; Arsenal were invincible, England were exciting.

A player's true character is in how he plays and not in his social life. You can hide your real personality in your social life, You cannot on the field.
