It would make sense if you had a dominant striker in the middle. But feeding crosses to a lone Jesus in the middle is not great plan

The reason for the high and wide wingers is to provide lanes for the 8s to operate in, either on or off the ball. If you compress the wingers then you suffocate the inside half spaces. Simple stuff.

You can operate more like a 4-3-3 with the wingers operating more narrow and vertically when you are leading (for e.g. the quick turnover for the Saka goal)
