Would've Kewell been a good match for Arsenal?

With Arsenal seemingly being the favourites to lure the Australian star away from Leeds before the season started, I ponder whether he would've helped the mighty Arsenal become a better team, or whether he would've been inconsistent as he is now at Liverpool.

Is it possible a player of his considerable talent could be inconsistent with the group of unselfish attackers of Arsenal?

Not really. He's been average this season.

But he's been average with Liverpool, who arent exactly the model of consistency. However, had he been at Arsenal instead of Liverpool, with the talent all around the pitch we have over Liverpool, do we think he would've played as he did in his Leeds days, that gave him the reputation he has today?

He would have been ok - we wouldn't be in a much better position than we are at the moment though.

I've got no complaints about the current squad though - I'm much more excited that we have Reyes now. Reyes has the potential to be so much more than Kewell.

His fault if he wants to join Liverpoop.

yeah..that's his fault that he wanted to join liverpool.not enough with that he also said that he choose liverpool over arsenal because gerard houllier is a better manager than our excellent mr Arsène wenger.really don't know what he's thinking.. :?

Harry Kewell's loss. Our Jose Reyes gain ;D

No point wondering whether Harry Kewell would have done well with Arsenal. He said he prefers Gerard Houllier over Arsène Wenger - so be it, his loss. Personally, I think he knew that going to Arsenal would make him only one of the others as he would not be an essential player and thus, not be in the top dog strata/billing at Arsenal alongside Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires. With Liverpool, he can still command top dog status along with Michael Owen and Steven Gerard. And THAT's what I think made him choose Liverpool over Arsenal - by that very action, he has shown that he is too insecure to even be at Arsenal.

if we had gotten kewell, we probably wouldn't have gotten reyes. If we had'nt gotten reyes he wouldn't have won us the FA cup match against sellski...so good choice kewell, go and ruin pool...

Who needs Kewell? I bet he's regretting going there now as he isn't going to win sh*t over there. All he'll get is a good run in the Carling Cup and some UEFA Cup football. Silly fool.

Kewell's a very frustrating and lazy player. He can be brilliant in one game and completely anonymous in the next three. Reyes will be much better then Kewell in a couple of years.

Think there isnt much we can improve with kewell in the team....i would rather bentley or Ryan smith or even pennant to start....they are the ones that came out from our academy and i will definately feel a greater sense of attachment towards them

It's quite understandable he chose Pool where he makes the first XI which he know he wouldn't at Arsenal. And I don't think Wenger ever considered buying him in the first place, the rumors of Arsenal buying him in the summer was made up by the press and his agent. And of course he must say he prefers the manager that believes in him as much as Houllier does when paying that amount of money for he services...

...otherwise it would be strange wouldn't it?

As much as i can admire his skills in certain games he's not a good enough (read consistent) player for Arsenal. Sorry aussies...

Some of you already know what I think of Harry Kewell. My view is that, in terms of pure footballing ability, Henry and Pires are probably the only players in this country who can definitively be said to be superior to Kewell. There are others who have roughly an equal amount of ability to Kewell (Scholes, Laurent Robert) but not a clearly greater level of ability. Now that Reyes has arrived, you could add him to the first category, but that still only makes three players who are clearly more gifted than Kewell.

He has absolutely everything an attacker needs: searing pace, supreme technique and distribution, excellent finishing (especially those cruise missile shots he specialises in), clever movement, and even heading. People forget how far ahead of his time he was when he first broke into the Leeds team as a teenager. He was one of the first "full sprectrum" attackers - players who can do damage from a range of angles in a range of ways (i.e. conventional width, cutting in from either left or right wing, playing through the centre, dropping deep, etc). Henry has become the master of it, but Kewell started the trend in this country.

You're all basically right, however, that there is something about him - not relating to actual ability - that prevents him from reaching his potential, possibly an attitude problem. Wenger is the best man-manager in the world and may have been able to transform him into one of the elite players in europe, which is what he should already be by now.

If Kewell seriously believes that Hoofier is a better manager than Wenger, then he is obviously a nutter. However, he could still be proven right that Liverpool are a coming force in English football - all the fundamentals are right at LFC apart from the manager: they have the core of a good team (Owen, Gerrard, Kirkland, Kewell himself), some promising young talent (Sinama, Le Tallec), a new stadium to be built for a ridiculously low sum, and a financially stable club structure. You'd also think that the pendulum of history will is on schedule to swing back to Liverpool after their prolonged period in the wilderness. If they replace Hoofier with someone who knows what he's doing, then I expect Liverpool to be seriously competing with us, Manure and Chelsea for the forseeable future.

I would have loved it had Kewell signed for Arsenal, as he is probably my favourite non-Arsenal player along with Roy Keane (yes we all hate Manure, but the man is a modern titan). But Reyes has the potential to be much better than Kewell, so I'm happy now.

Was just waiting for JGooner to post hehe ;)

Like JGooner said the guy is so talented, the **** always seems to play well against us as well! There is a big problem in his game, he can be superb 1 match and just be non-existent the next. He just isn't consistent, he can be so lazy at times as well, must be so frustrating for managers to deal with him.

The reason he joined Liverpool instead of Arsenal + Man utd was financial, Liverpool paid £5mill for him and Leeds got £1.5mill out of the deal. The agent got a nice chunk and Kewell himself must of got a nice lump sum as well. He knew that being lazy wouldn’t be tolerated there. He would also be coming up against Pires and Giggs and he probably didn’t fancy having to try and take their place so he took the easy option.

As for Liverpool they won't get back to the top as I simply don't think their players are good enough. Apart from Gerrad no one in that team stands out imo. Got a few good players but only 1 great one, even he at times as been very inconsistent (I'm talking about Gerrad btw). And as we know consistency wins you titles and they simply don't have that.

I say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

He is over hype and inconsistent. Personally i do not think Arsenal was in the market for him

If he came, Reyes would nevre be here. Reyes has also been the number 1 target.

Beside choicing Liverpool, showed that he was money hungry and lacked ambition and class.

May the sod rot at Liverpool

Totally agree, Kewell was an alternative for Reyes so if we did get him we would have missed out on Reyes. Kewell is an awesome talent in my opinion and he would be World Class if he joined us. But its too late now and we have Jose to enjoy and looking at it I think things happened for the better.
