Celtic is one of the great historical clubs, but they swim in such a small pond that truly top players will ultimately wish to challenge themselves in the bigger bodies of water. Footballers can't afford to think like fans. He is a professional. He can love Celtic and play elsewhere. His ambition will outweigh whatever he may have in his heart for the club.
Same thing as a lot of South American players, test themselves in the big leagues then often go back to their boyhood club to retire.

It would be a lot of fun to travel through time and go back to the 1960s and 70s to watch some games in the Brazilian and Argentine leagues before money started luring the best South American players to Europe. I've sometimes heard people question Pele because he never "tested himself in Europe," but in truth very few South American players played in Europe before about the 1980s. The great Brazilian players of their generations were playing at home and the leagues would have been the equal, in terms of talent, of the European leagues.

But time and money have changed things drastically. Even the relative upstart MLS is raiding those leagues for top talent. Yet when you watch those leagues or the Copa Libertadores, you'll still find a lot of very good players. It's like you can find talent hanging around on street corners there.

Pele wasn't allowed to "test himself in Europe" he was used a a political pawn.

Arsenal Quotes

I often relive those 49 undefeated matches. I do believe in signs to a certain extent, and as I was born in 1949, I sometimes tell myself it was our destiny to lose the 50th. Those 49 matches are etched within me and within each player: it is something fundamental, a triumph born out of passion.
