Squillaci all over. Almost 30 years old and no caps for France, doesn't bode well if your signing could easily be a potential Hull ****ing City target as well.

We're not signing someone to displace Koscielny or Mertesacker, especially considering Chambers is seen as the prodigal son in regards to that position. Sadly, this is vintage Wenger signing. Back up purely due to the fact we're short on numbers.

To be fair if the £20 million rumoured budget is true then there's not too many options these days. I'm not sure how many players we're aiming to sign, if any, but I wouldn't expect 2 or more top class players for £20 million. For instance if we're signing a defender and a midfielder for £20 million they'd both probably be bargain bucket. Not that I think we will get in a CB and a DM.

The worst thing, Wenger doesn't do short term signings, so someone like Perrin will stop us from a top signing in the summer.

And if it's between Perrin and Mings then I'd definitely rather Perrin than trying to convert another young full-back into a CB. St. Etienne are doing quite well this season so he might be a solid enough option. In Wenger's eyes Kos-Per is untouchable for at least 2 more seasons.

Wenger denied interest in Mings anyway.

Don't sign a defender in summer 2014 to compete with Kos and Per, sign Perrin in Jan, who then blocks a new top defender arriving in summer 2015.

Continuous ****ery.

What worries me most is that this guy has ZERO top level experience. Over the course of his career he has played eight (!) Europa League games. He has played zero (!) games in the CL. Also zero (!) games for the French NT. His vast experience comes from playing Ligue 1 football at St. Etienne. He may actually be a good player, I don't know, but there are some major question marks hanging over this signing.

He would be ok as a loanee until the end of the season, I suppose, but that won't happen. He's been with St. Etienne his entire career, signed a new contract last september, so he won't leave them for just six-months mid-season. It'd have to be a permanent deal, which would see us start the next season with three CB's aged 30 or over.

For me, this has 'disastrously backfiring gamble' written all over it. We have at least 20 million to spend and we've just freed up 100k in wages due to Poldi's loan. Please, please, please just get a top class CB or at the very least loan someone so we can get a top class CB in the summer.

Winston Reid would be in the mix also but if a transfer happens for him it will likely be on transfer deadline day unless he decides in the end to sign a contract extension with West Ham. Apart from being versatile it's hard for me to see pros going with Perrin. Reid is about the right age to come into his prime over the next year or so, and then a good four seasons beyond, and of course comes with PL experience.

I for one like it. No one here, including me, watched Perrin regularly. Means neither can judge his qualities. Is he average player that could never get a better club invite, or is he a very good player that noone ever rated enough?

I can only read about him and unlike many, I like what I see.
He is loyal, he is leader, and in a league like French is, where there is a thin line betwean bottom clubs and Europa league contenders, to keep ur average team stabile in upper part of the table is not a joke.

**** with 'he is short' stuff.
One of the best defenders I ever saw, speaking of jumping and headers, was even much shorter then Loic is. (I am talking about Ivan Cordoba).
One of the world best defenders in recent history, Canavarro, is also shorter (not that I agree he is that good)
And correct me if I am wrong, but I read Perrin has the most headers won in whole league there...

**** 10 cm in height, if you're IQ is lower and cause of that cant read game better, cant position smarter, or mark at high level.

Also, to have 3 defenders at around same age, still at their top 3 years from now, is not a bad thinh, At ALL.

Not saying I am right about him, but I see lots of good things there.

Reid would be a starter, does Wenger want that? I would suggest he is happy with Kos and Per, with Chambers in the grooming stage while someone like Perrin comes in and plays the versatile role.

Kos' chronic Achilles issues coupled with Per a bit flat this season (past the hill? we'll have to see) could have tipped the balance, particularly with a decent run in the CL not ruled out with our decent draw with Monaco.

On top of that Reid is a good opportunistic buy with his contract situation. We really don't need more versatile players if we commit to ditching some of the fluff we have for CDM, thereby enabling enough registration room for specialists (CB and CDM). Then again, yes, what we want and what Wenger wants is often very different.

Don't see how Reid could possibly be a bad buy. He's fully PL proven, he's at the right age for a defender, he won't cost much with 6 months left on his contract and he's not cup tied. If it doesn't work out it won't be too hard to sell him on because of the factors mentioned above unless we do our usual trick of pricing him out of the market by overpaying his wages.

I know nothing about Perrin apart from the fact that he reminds me of Squillaci for some reason and he could well turn out to be the next Cannavaro who for some bizzare reason has gone 29 years without a single French cap. At this point however it would seemingly make more sense to throw 7-8m at West Ham for Reid then to go for Perrin.

From what I've read Perrin isn't actually that versatile. Hasn't played anything but CB for the last five years, so his ability at fullback and DM also seems like a big question mark.

I don't watch him regularly and know most including yourself don't rate stats highly, but his whoscored stats are very high. 7.59 this season and 7.74, partly it seems because he makes tons of clearances.

Perin's stats are top class

Tackles per game: 2.6
Attempted tackles per game: 2.9
Dribbled past 0.3
Interceptions per game: 1.6
Clearances: 9.5
Aerials attempted: 5.1
Aerials won: 3.6
Passing: 88 percent

His height worries me, as it seemingly does for others, but perhaps he has a leap like Sagna, who is shorter than Perrin at 5ft9 (but Sagna is built like a brick, unlike Perrin).

His clearance stats paint a picture of him having a classically English centre back defensive attitude of "if in doubt, get it out!"

Nah , not just us . He reminds me of Lucas Neill in that regard.
