And Arsenal nearly none.

Just goes to show how much of a sleeping giant we really are.

Happy birthday to the greatest entertainer in this sport, a true legend!

Even though I was always in favor of Zidane, who, in my eyes, had no equal as he was the epitome of the perfect player who combined perfoming in every big game with an outstanding character off the field, I have to say that Ronaldinho was the one, where you just could not help it but to go along with his constant smile when he was on the ball.

Constantly striving for the exceptional, unique, not seen before.

Unlike others, who we got fed up with because they rarely succeeded, he pulled it off every single damn time he tried.

With Ronaldinho, you did not hope for a moment of art to be put forward, but waited for it to happen whenever he touched the ball.

There is no reason to argue about Zidane OR Ronaldinho anyways - I might put Messi on top of the list because of his unmatched numbers paired with his ambivalence in talent on the field, as he combined everything - but those two, Ronaldinho and Zidane, have been the greatest entertainer, idols and leaders I have ever seen.

SIAP.

A football league within a Ugandan prison. The team names are based on the names of real teams. There's an "Arsenal" team that competes.

Interesting piece on the TV schedule in light of Arsenal playing Monday night in the PL and then right again on Thursday in the EL.

"The Premier League is formally a corporation in which all 20 clubs are shareholders, but the real clout resides with Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City. [...] So, in summary, the top flight is owned by the clubs, acts according to their interests, and can only operate according to a mandate afforded by the clubs. The Premier League is the clubs.

With this in mind, let us examine a topic that continues to perplex me: the perennial criticism over TV scheduling. In February, Mauricio Pochettino complained about having to play Leicester City on the Sunday and then host the German side Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on the Wednesday. “We are not receiving help,” he said. “It’s a massive disadvantage to play with one day less to prepare. The Premier League must care about teams involved in the competition.”

A few days later, Jürgen Klopp joined in, questioning the decision to schedule Liverpool’s clash against Burnley on a Sunday in early March — three days before they faced Bayern Munich. “I don’t think anyone at the Premier League thinks about that,” he said. “It is not interesting for them. I spoke about that in the group stages and people thought I was looking for excuses.”[...]

Here’s my question: who do these critics think the Premier League are? Who do they suppose are making these decisions? Do they posit rogue operatives at Gloucester Place scheming against the top clubs? Do they not realise that the PL is the creature of the top clubs; that the PL officials do nothing, say nothing, sign nothing, without the say-so of their members, and elite clubs in particular?

When it comes to scheduling, every three years, Paul Molnar, the director of broadcasting, and Richard Scudamore, the former executive chairman, consult with experts on the science of auctioning to construct a series of packages relating to domestic TV rights. These offer broadcasters such as Sky the opportunity to bid for the right to pick the juiciest fixtures, including on a Sunday afternoon, the most lucrative slot in the schedule, thus maximising the financial return to the top clubs, who receive a disproportionate share of this money. The last such auction secured £5.1 billion, mainly from Sky.

Molnar and Scudamore then take these proposed packages to their masters — the top six — for sign-off. Every three years, they have the same conversation. The clubs are asked whether they would like to alter these packages to provide for an extra rest day before Champions League games, but which would significantly reduce their value. And every three years, they receive the same reply: “Are you mad? We want the big TV money, not least to buy top players and managers.” [...]

I was just thinking as I watched that earlier on the Champions League pregame coverage that it's one helluva country we have where we value guns more than we value our children. :(

yeah, I can't even find a fitting emotion to describe how clusterfucked my brain is about your gun policy. It's just so reasonable that everyone being allowed to carry a gun is a ****ing bad idea, but the US even goes beyond needing reason, cause all those shootings go beyond reason...kids are getting killed while they're at ****ing school in massive numbers cause there's no control . I know it's got a lot to do with the lobby power of the NRA but hell, the vast majority of US citizens should also learn that a) the Wild West and Natives or Outlaws looming behind every bush is beyond the time cause you either genocided them or put them in prison and that b) shooting someone is not the go to response when feeling at risk or having a conflict.

Money owns our politics by owning our politicians and our two major political parties (especially the Republicans, although Democrats are influenced by Wall Street and corporate money as well, which is why most won't push for things such as universal national health care). Somebody has to get a cut of everything.

In fact, strong majorities of Americans favor universal background checks for gun purchases and bringing back the assault weapons ban that was in effect from the early 90s until Republicans allowed it to expire in the name of "freedom" (i.e., money) a decade later. But right now it won't happen because Republicans control the Senate and the Presidency and will almost to a politician put the interests of the gun lobby (which funds their campaigns and provides many with cushy, high-paying jobs once they're out of office) ahead of what the people want.

Saturday is the 20th anniversary of the Columbine Massacre. After watching this piece this afternoon, I was remembering sitting there through most of the day watching the events at Columbine unfold on cable television. I naively assumed at the time that politicians would do something (as happened in Australia and Scotland) to make sure it never happened again. But instead the availability of the kind of weapons used in these massacres has been made easier and we have Republican politicians going on television and saying with a straight face that the solution is to arm teachers so they can take out these shooters. A lot of gullible people have been duped into believing that more guns make us safer.

One great thing that came out of the Parkland shooting, however, is that a lot of Anthony's fellow students took activism to new levels with the Never Again campaign and the March for Our Lives. Young people give me hope that someday this country will come to its senses in so many areas, including our national love affair with guns.

Very well said @Slartibartfast
The hypocrisy of conservatives and the gun lobby in general is that more guns make for a more safety.
Their motto: "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" is one of the most disgusting things to claim, in the face of massacres at schools/churches/mosques/theaters/malls that occur on an almost regular basis.

Similarly on birth control/healthcare issue.

They go batshit crazy on birth control/abortions, but then as soon as a child is born they claim "Universal healthcare is a myth,we're not socialists"

Pop those little bastards out, but then you're on your own. I won't go into detail and veer us further off course, but here are two articles that explain how this country went batshit crazy. The first ("The 'biblical view that's younger than the Happy Meal") reveals how different the evangelical position on abortion was 50 years ago; the second ("The Real Origins of the Religious Right") reveals that it wasn't about abortion so much as about protecting segregation.
