Surely Balotelli and Sanchez would qualify as being bargain opportunities to sign special talents akin to Özil, rather than being part of the 'normal' transfer window activity? Same could apply if Khedira is available for around 15-20m?

If so then I see no reason why we shouldn't then push the envelope all the way out and sign as many such players as we can whilst the opportunity presents. IMO they are not only genuine starting quality, but are also of special quality that it would not take them the usual 5+ months to adapt - particularly if we were able to rotate effectively during the winter period.

Once Milan start asking £30m+ for Balotelli he doesn't represent good value and although everyone here has different views re. Benzema vs. Balotelli, I'm pretty sure AW would choose Benzema if available, and AW is probably keeping an eye on how things pan out at RM. Meanwhile I would try to snap up Alexis ASAP and that would provide a platform where we don't necessarily have to bring in a specialist CF, which can be an optional bonus where we can wait towards the transfer window deadline if required, in the meantime sorting out the other priorities, i.e. CDM, RB, CB (if required), and GK.

^ But 40 million was the release clause..? Why offer more than that?

Because the bid was rejected. A second bid of £50m might have been accepted.

That wasn't the point you made though. You said the 40 million bid was an insult to Liverpool. What we should have done after Liverpool rejected the bid is a whole other discussion.

The bid was good enough, personally think it was the +£1 that pushed them. If we had offered 41M it might have been a different story. Giving them 10M more than a RC that we know about is just ridiculous.

Apparently he's signing for Liverpool, who may end up loaning him back to Lille. Good shout though.

Origi looked good. Down to business we need a CM and Forward as it seems we won't land a top striker.

CM: Witsel, Bender, Khedira, Schneiderlin, Carvalho.

Forward: Sanchez, Di Maria, Reus, Lavezzi.

All these names are possibly available no excuses for not jumping in with bids.

Although this Schneiderlin deal is "all but done", in case it isn't to be I still think a DM/CM is a must buy. I don't wishlist often but...

I've been really impressed with Muhamed Besic this World Cup, I know the risks about judging players on international tournaments, but the lad looked fantastic. He could pass, tackle, mark, position fantastically well. He's still playing at Ferencvaros so could be an absolute steal.

The William Carvalho to Man Utd links have gone dead, maybe something there?

There's a player for Mainz called Johannes Geis who has ridiculous whoscored stats, some of his highlight videos are fantastic as well.

Also on the few occasions I've watched Schalke, Leon Goretzka has stood out far more than Draxler or Meyer.

Rabiot is another younger alternative for CMD.

Would passing on Cesc in preference of Schniedelin seem underwhelming to anybody else? I like him but he would be underwhelming as our no. 1 midfield target.

Loving the Sanchez rumours but this time last week Balotelli was as good as signed.

Not really. I wanted Cesc back but inside I understand he isnt what we need although I think he could play the Arteta role, Schneiderlin however is the type of player we need.

Young, experienced, played within the PL and fulfills a position we are short in. If we get him and Sanchez in Id be very happy.

Well Cesc is an attacking midfielder and Schneiderlinn usually sits more often than not..... so, no not underwhelming at all.

Signing Cesc and not bringing in players in key areas would have been really underwhelming though.

No, Schneiderlin is actually what's needed, Fabregas is a luxury. Fabregas would cause problems with midfield selection, Schneiderlin will provide a solution.
